TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the observation of the X(3872) in the J/psipi(+)pi(-) channel with decaying to mu(+)mu(-), in p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.96 TeV.
Abstract: We report the observation of the X(3872) in the J/psipi(+)pi(-) channel, with J/psi decaying to mu(+)mu(-), in p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.96 TeV. Using approximately 230 pb(-1) of data collected with the Run II D0 detector, we observe 522+/-100 X(3872) candidates. The mass difference between the X(3872) state and the J/psi is measured to be 774.9+/-3.1(stat)+/-3.0(syst) MeV/c(2). We have investigated the production and decay characteristics of the X(3872) and find them to be similar to those of the psi(2S) state.

Abstract: This article reflects on the manifestations or signs of comprehensiveness in health practice, seeking to facilitate recognition of experiences that are advancing in this direction and allowing them to be analyzed subsequently. The article is also intended to spawn increasing involvement by actors in practices based on comprehensiveness. The point of departure is the principle that what characterizes comprehensiveness is an expanded grasp of the needs and ability to recognize the adequacy of the health care supply in the specific context where the subject meets the health team; in addition, to foster comprehensiveness means defending the notion that health actions be attuned to the specific context of each encounter.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented colossal measurements on MnAs under pressure, reaching values up to 267 J/(kg K), far greater than the magnetic limit arising from the assumption of magnetic field independence of the lattice and electronic entropy contributions.
Abstract: To present day, the maximum magnetocaloric effect (MCE) at room temperature for a magnetic field change of 5 T is 40 J/(kg K) for MnAs. In this Letter we present colossal MCE measurements on MnAs under pressure, reaching values up to 267 J/(kg K), far greater than the magnetic limit arising from the assumption of magnetic field independence of the lattice and electronic entropy contributions. The origin of the effect is the contribution to the entropy variation coming from the lattice through the magnetoelastic coupling.

TL;DR: Guanabara Bay, located adjacent to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is highly contaminated by substances derived from domestic and industrial effluents as well as from agricultural runoff, and sedimentary coprostanol and other faecal sterols were used to investigate historical trends in sewage contamination as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Guanabara Bay, located adjacent to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is highly contaminated by substances derived from domestic and industrial effluents as well as from agricultural runoff. In the present work, sedimentary coprostanol and other faecal sterols were used to investigate historical trends in sewage contamination. Sediment cores were collected from eight different (and characterized) locations in the bay and were sectioned into dated segments. Organic carbon was determined by dry combustion and sterols were separated and quantified by GC/MS. The space-distribution of organic carbon and faecal sterol concentrations generally coincided with the presence of known pollution sources. Concentrations of coprostanol as high as 40 μg g −1 were found, indicating areas of severe sewage contamination. Faecal sterol ratios, commonly used as tools to investigate contamination in temperate environments, however, were found to have limited applicability to this tropical estuarine system, probably due to the influence of intensive primary production and microbial processes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe landfill mining tests, including excavation, screening, and fraction characterization, carried out in the MAsalycke and Gladsax landfills for municipal solid waste (MSW) in Sweden.
Abstract: This article describes landfill-mining tests, including excavation, screening, and fraction characterization, carried out in the MAsalycke and Gladsax landfills for municipal solid waste (MSW) in Sweden. The excavated waste in these two sites was 17–22 and 23–25 years old, respectively. The main part of MAsalycke was unaffected by degradation, and during excavations no substantial amount of biogas was detected. After screening, three size fractions were obtained: 50 mm. Soil amendment and anaerobic digestion with energy extraction are suggested for the first and second fraction, respectively. Incineration with energy recovery is possible with the third fraction after any coarse (inert) material is removed, and construction/demolition waste can easily be recycled provided that it is not contaminated by hazardous material. Excavated waste taken from different depths was also analysed and compared in relation to composition, calorific value, and leachate constituents.

TL;DR: It is shown that heme (1–50 μM) delays human neutrophil spontaneous apoptosis in vitro, and the involvement of the Ras/Raf/MAPK and PI3K pathway and ERK-2 nuclear translocation pathways in the modulation of the antiapoptotic effect is confirmed.
Abstract: High levels of free heme are found in pathological states of increased hemolysis, such as sickle cell disease, malaria, and ischemia reperfusion. The hemolytic events are often associated with an inflammatory response that usually turns into chronic inflammation. We recently reported that heme is a proinflammatory molecule, able to induce neutrophil migration, reactive oxygen species generation, and IL-8 expression. In this study, we show that heme (1-50 microM) delays human neutrophil spontaneous apoptosis in vitro. This effect requires heme oxygenase activity, and depends on reactive oxygen species production and on de novo protein synthesis. Inhibition of ERK and PI3K pathways abolished heme-protective effects upon human neutrophils, suggesting the involvement of the Ras/Raf/MAPK and PI3K pathway on this effect. Confirming the involvement of these pathways in the modulation of the antiapoptotic effect, heme induces Akt phosphorylation and ERK-2 nuclear translocation in neutrophils. Futhermore, inhibition of NF-kappa B translocation reversed heme antiapoptotic effect. NF-kappa B (p65 subunit) nuclear translocation and I kappa B degradation were also observed in heme-treated cells, indicating that free heme may regulate neutrophil life span modulating signaling pathways involved in cell survival. Our data suggest that free heme associated with hemolytic episodes might play an important role in the development of chronic inflammation by interfering with the longevity of neutrophils.

TL;DR: Self-reported and measured weight and height information had good agreement and validity and in similar populations, when few resources are available, it is possible to use self-reported data instead of actual measurements.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the validity of self-reported weight and height and the body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A study was made of 3,713 employees of a public university in Rio de Janeiro, in which they were participants in Phase 1 of a longitudinal study. Information was obtained through a self-administered questionnaire, and measurements were carried out after its application. Student's paired t-test, Bland & Altman's graphs and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were utilized to evaluate the differences between the measured and the reported parameters. The sensitivity and specificity of the various BMI categories were estimated. RESULTS: There was high agreement between the measured and reported weights (ICC=0.977) and heights (ICC=0.943). The BMI sensitivity, in its various categories, was around 80%, and the specificity was close to 92%. There was a slight and uniform tendency toward self-reported weight underestimation and self-reported height overestimation in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported and measured weight and height information had good agreement and validity. In similar populations, when few resources are available, it is possible to use self-reported data instead of actual measurements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed analysis of the productivity performance of the current structure of the sanitation sector in Brazil is presented, where the authors analyze how jurisdiction of operators, as well as the nature of the management, either private or public, has affected performance of current operators.
Abstract: Regulation in the sanitation sector in Brazil is facing a great deal of debate regarding the government level in which conceding authority should reside and how private operators can fulfill social objectives. The main objective of this study is to show that these issues are not the crucial barriers to the development of the sector when one looks at the productivity performance of the operators. Therefore, we elaborate a detailed analysis of the productivity performance of the current structure of the sanitation sector in Brazil. In doing so, we are able to analyze how jurisdiction of operators, as well as the nature of the management, either private or public, has affected performance of the current operators. Moreover, we investigate how the absence of tariff regulation has dissipated efficiencies and allowed the practice of monopolistic tariffs.

TL;DR: It is shown that the distribution of fibrillin‐1 and elastin is disrupted in all kinds of scars analyzed, but there are two patterns: one for normal scars and another for excessive scars.
Abstract: Hypertrophic scars and keloids are two forms of excessive cutaneous scarring. Considering the importance of extracellular matrix elements in tissue repair, a morphological and quantitative analysis of the elastic system components (fibrillin-1 and elastin) was performed in normal skin, normal scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids. In superficial and deep dermis, fibrillin-1 volume density was significantly higher in normal skin compared with normal scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids. The fibrillin-1 volume density did not show differences between hypertrophic scars and keloids in superficial or deep dermis. In superficial dermis, elastin volume density was higher in normal skin compared with normal scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids. In deep dermis, the elastin volume density was higher in keloids compared with normal skins, normal scars, and hypertrophic scars. We showed that the distribution of fibrillin-1 and elastin is disrupted in all kinds of scars analyzed, but there are two patterns: one for normal scars and another for excessive scars.

TL;DR: The results conclusively show that single gene GST polymorphisms do not confer a substantial risk of breast cancer to its carriers and GSTs did not interact with smoking or reproductive history to modify cancer risk.
Abstract: The glutathione S -transferase ( GST ) genes are involved in the metabolism of various carcinogens. Deletion polymorphisms in the genes GSTM1 and GSTT1 and a base transition polymorphism at codon 105 (Ile→Val) in GSTP1 were investigated in relation to breast cancer risk. Tobacco smoking and reproductive factors were examined as potential effect modifiers. Individual data from seven case-control studies were pooled within the International Collaborative Study on Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogens. To measure the effect of GSTs on breast cancer risk, odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were computed adjusting for study center and age. The modifying effect was investigated by stratification on variables of smoking habits and reproductive history. A total of 2,048 cases with breast cancer and 1,969 controls were analyzed. The relative odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of breast cancer was 0.98 (0.86–1.12) with the GSTM1 null, 1.11 (0.87–1.41) with the GSTT1 null, 1.01 (0.79–1.28) with GSTP1 heterozygous mutants, and 0.93 (0.62–1.38) with GSTP1 homozygous mutants. Stratification by smoking or reproductive factors did not reveal a modifying effect of these variables, nor was there any association between GSTM1 and age at diagnosis of breast cancer. This is the largest study investigating susceptibility to breast cancer due to polymorphisms in the GST genes. The results conclusively show that single gene GST polymorphisms do not confer a substantial risk of breast cancer to its carriers. Furthermore, GSTs did not interact with smoking or reproductive history to modify cancer risk.

TL;DR: It was concluded that MPS VI has high morbidity and that, when compared with data published in the literature, patients in this study were diagnosed later and presented with a higher frequency of cardiological findings.
Abstract: This paper presents data collected by a Brazilian center in a multinational multicenter observational study of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI), aiming at determining the epidemiological, clinical, and biochemical profile of these patients. Twenty-eight south-American patients with MPS VI were evaluated through medical interview, physical exam, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, ophthalmologic evaluation, quantification of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in urine, and measurement of the activity of N-acetylgalactosamine-4-sulfatase (ARSB) in leukocytes. 92.9% of patients were Brazilian. Mean age at diagnosis and at evaluation was 48.4 months and 97.1 months, respectively. 88% of patients had onset of symptomatology before the age of 36 months. Consanguinity was reported by 27% of the families. Mean weight and height at birth were 3.481 kg and 51.3 cm, respectively. The most frequently reported clinical manifestations were short stature, corneal clouding, coarse facial features, joint contractures, and claw hands. All patients presented with echocardiogram changes as well as corneal clouding. Mean ARSB activity in leukocytes was 5.4 nmoles/h/mg protein (reference values: 72-174), and urinary excretion of GAGs was on average 7.9 times higher than normal. The number of clinical manifestations did not show a significant correlation with the levels of urinary GAGs nor with the ARSB activity. Also, no significant correlation was found between the levels of urinary GAGs and the ARSB activity. It was concluded that MPS VI has high morbidity and that, when compared with data published in the literature, patients in our study were diagnosed later and presented with a higher frequency of cardiological findings.

TL;DR: In this paper, searches for neutral Higgs bosons produced at LEP in association with Z bosons, in pairs and in the Yukawa process are presented, and results are presented in the form of mass-dependent upper bounds on coupling factors (in units of model independent reference cross-sections) for all processes, allowing interpretation of the data in a large class of models.
Abstract: Searches for neutral Higgs bosons produced at LEP in association with Z bosons, in pairs and in the Yukawa process are presented in this paper. Higgs boson decays into b quarks, tau leptons, or other Higgs bosons are considered, giving rise to four-b, four-b+jets, six-b and four-tau final states, as well as mixed modes with b quarks and tau leptons. The whole mass domain kinematically accessible at LEP in these topologies is searched. The analysed data set covers both the LEP1 and LEP2 energy ranges and exploits most of the luminosity recorded by the DELPHI experiment. No convincing evidence for a signal is found, and results are presented in the form of mass-dependent upper bounds on coupling factors (in units of model-independent reference cross-sections) for all processes, allowing interpretation of the data in a large class of models.

TL;DR: It is suggested that elastin degradation took place during development of pulmonary changes in mice exposed to CS, and activation of MMPs specific forElastin may be a determining factor for susceptibility to emphysema.
Abstract: Cigarette smoke (CS) causes pulmonary emphysema in humans and elastin degradation plays a key role in its pathogenesis. Previous studies on CS-exposed animals have been equivocal and have not clearly demonstrated the progression of the disease. In this study, morphometry was used to assess lung modifications to alveolar septa, airspaces, elastic and collagen fibers, and alveolar macrophages. Male (n = 40) C57/BL6 mice were exposed 3 times/day, whole body, to CS from three cigarettes for 10, 20, 30, or 60 days. Control groups (n = 10) were sham-smoked or received no exposure (day 0, n = 10). Morphometry included measurements of volume fraction of alveolar septa and airspaces, elastic and collagen fibers, and surface fraction of elastic fibers and alveolar septa. Morphometrical differences in mice after 60 days of exposure were greater than those after 10, 20, or 30 days, suggesting a progression of the disease. Inflammatory lesions in the lungs of mice contained significantly more metalloelastase (MMP-12) in macrophages at 10, 20, and 30 days than in controls of mice exposed for 60 days. These results suggest that elastin degradation took place during development of pulmonary changes in mice exposed to CS, and activation of MMPs specific for elastin may be a determining factor for susceptibility to emphysema.
