TL;DR: Ohanian and Ruffini's Gravitation and Spacetime, Second Edition, the authors is the best book on the market today of 500 pages or less on gravitation and general relativity.
Abstract: Now more than ever, Gravitation and Spacetime, Second Edition, by Hans C. Ohanian and new coauthor Remo Ruffini, deserves John Wheeler's praise as "the best book on the market today of 500 pages or less on gravitation and general relativity." Gravitation and Spacetime has been thoroughly updated with the most exciting finds and hottest theoretical topics in general relativity and cosmology. Highlights of the revision include the rise and fall of the fifth force, principles and applications of gravitational lensing, COBE's spectacular confirmation of the blackbody spectrum of the cosmic thermal radiation, theories of dark matter and inflation, and the early universe as a testing ground for particle physicists' unification theories, and much, much more. The ideal choice for a graduate-level introduction to general relativity, Gravitation and Spacetime is also suitable for an advanced undergaduate course.

TL;DR: It is the opinion is that a precise difference exists between the structures of these two types of coverings.
Abstract: Athletic Injuries (American Medical Association) is based on symptomatology and clinical findings. This classification is as follows: ( 1 ) tenosynovitis, (2) tendinitis, (3) ruptures. The term tenosynovitis is used indiscriminately to refer to tendons that are invested by true synovial sheaths as well as tendons, like the tendo Achilles, that are in actuality surrounded by peritendon.1 Our opinion is that a precise difference exists between the structures of these two types of coverings. We reserve the use of the term tenosynovitis exclusively to refer to acute and chronic inflamatory processes involving true synovial sheaths.

TL;DR: It was found that in red blood cells catalase acts in series with superoxide dismutase against bursts of oxygen radicals formed from oxyhemoglobin, while glutathione & peroxidase may protect the cell membrane against low concentrations of H2O2.
Abstract: The enzymatic destruction of oxidizing products produced during metabolic reduction of oxygen in the cell (such as singlet oxygen, H2O2 and OH radical) involves the concerted action of superoxide dismutase-which removes O 2 - and yields H2O2-and H2O2 removing enzymes such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase. A difference in distribution or ratio of these enzymes in various tissues may result in a different reactivity of oxygen radicals. It was found that in red blood cells superoxide dismutase and catalase are extracted in the same fraction as hemoglobin, while glutathione peroxidase appears to be “loosely” bound to the cellular structure. This suggests that in red blood cells catalase acts in series with superoxide dismutase against bursts of oxygen radicals formed from oxyhemoglobin, while glutathione & peroxidase may protect the cell membrane against low concentrations of H2O2. On the other hand, catalase activity is absent in various types of ascites tumor cells, while glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase are found in the cytoplasm. However, the peroxidase/dismutase ratio is lower than in liver cells, and this may provide an explanation for the higher susceptibility of tumor cells to treatments likely to involve oxygen radicals.

Abstract: An exposition of the concepts and of the results in feedback system stability is given. Both the input/output approach and the Lyapunov approach are considered, and it is shown how these may be viewed and unified in the context of dissipative systems.

TL;DR: Comparison of the data obtained from this material with those furnished by an electron microscope investigation carried out on the loaded osteons suggests that the change in slope at low stresses is due to failure of the interfibrillar cementing substance in those lamellae having fiber bundles oriented perpendicularly to the loading direction.

TL;DR: In this paper, the application of Tenax® to the extraction of organic micro-pollutants such as pesticides and polychlorobiphenyls from waters has been studied, and it has been observed that also in the presence of other pollutants (oil, surface-active substances, etc.) the results obtained with an absorption column of tenax-Celite are equivalent to those obtained with the continous liquid-liquid extraction technique.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dielectric behavior of polystyrene aqueous suspensions with low ionic conductivity has been investigated in the frequency range 5 kHz to 30 MHz, and the observed dispersions have been studied as due to the overlapping of two distinct processes, on the basis of the Schwarz-Schurr model.
Abstract: The dielectric behavior of polystyrene aqueous suspensions with low ionic conductivity has been investigated in the frequency range 5 kHz to 30 MHz. The observed dispersions have been studied as due to the overlapping of two distinct processes, on the basis of the Schwarz-Schurr model. The characteristic parameters of the model, as a function of temperature, have been valued.

Abstract: The authors report the incidence of portal thrombosis in their experience, of patients who have been operated on for splenectomy as treatment for portal hypertension with splenomegaly and hypersplenism without a portal systemic shunt. In 161 patients studied angiographically for portal hypertension due to cirrhosis, portal thrombosis was shown in 19 patients. Of these 19 patients 13 were previously splenectomized. Only 6 were never operated upon.

TL;DR: Needle biopsies from the iliac crest of 40 uremic patients treated with hemodialysis have been compared by light and electron microscopy and showed that the enlargement and irregularity of the osteocytic lacunae were not always due to osteocytics osteolysis; the same effect might be due to defective calcification of the lacunar wall.
Abstract: Needle biopsies from the iliac crest of 40 uremic patients treated with hemodialysis have been compared by light and electron microscopy. The most obvious bone changes were represented by an increased amount of osteoid tissue (osteomalacic changes) and by enhanced bone resorption. The osteomalacic changes were chiefly characterized by the presence of thick osteoid borders whose collagen fibrils were often completely uncalcified. In a few cases, small roundish aggregates of crystals were irregularly present through the osteoid matrix; some of them were closely related to roundish, electron-dense bodies surrounded by a membrane. The increased rate of bone resorption, which was often comparable to that which occurs in the most severe cases of plimary hyperparathyroidism, was due to both osteoclastic activity and osteocytic osteolysis. Electron microscopy showed that the enlargement and irregularity of the osteocytic lacunae were not always due to osteocytic osteolysis; the same effect might be due to defective calcification of the lacunar wall. The advantages of comparing the same specimens under the light and electron microscopes are discussed.
