TL;DR: It is clear that the majority of rat central nervous system neurotensin‐like immunoreactivity is indistinguishable from the synthetic tridecapeptide, however, smaller amounts of carboxy‐ and amino‐terminal neurotensIn‐like Immunoreactivity were detected.
Abstract: Carboxy- and amino-terminal specific neurotensin antisera have been characterized and used to determine the nature of neurotensin-like immunoreactivity in the rat central nervous system. Using these antisera, together with the separation of neurotensin-like immunoreactivity on reversephase HPLC columns, it is clear that the majority of rat central nervous system neurotensin-like immunoreactivity is indistinguishable from the synthetic tridecapeptide. However, smaller amounts of carboxy- and amino-terminal neurotensin-like immunoreactivity were detected, which may correspond to carboxy- and amino-terminal fragments of neurotensin. In addition, using the amino-terminal directed neurotensin antiserum, a detailed distribution of neurotensin-like immunoreactivity in the rat central nervous system is described. Highest amounts were found in the hypothalamus, central amygdaloid nucleus, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and the substantia gelatinosa of the spinal cord and of the trigeminal region.

TL;DR: In this paper, the elastic and inelastic mean free paths in the (0-8.5)-eV energy region were extracted from Xe films (0, 3000 \AA{}) deposited at various temperatures on different metal substrates [Nb,Pt,W(100].
Abstract: Electron transmission experiments in the (0-20)-eV energy range have been performed on Xe films (0-3000 \AA{}) deposited at various temperatures on different metal substrates [Nb,Pt,W(100)]. A theoretical model is used to extract from these experiments the elastic and inelastic mean free paths in the (0-8.5)-eV energy region. Some structures in the transmitted current arise from inelastic processes and yield information on electronic excitations (excitons and electron-hole-pair creation) and the energy of the bottom of the conduction band. Other structures present in the elastic mean free path appear to be caused by structural effects and thermal disorder of the deposited film.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed to move the integration nodes along the "streamlines" before evaluating the elementary convection matrices, which are one-dimensional manifolds, to remove spurious oscillations that occur in the solution of diffusion convection equations.
Abstract: Upwind finite element schemes remove spurious oscillations that occur in the solution of diffusion convection equations. Up to now these schemes lose part of their accuracy when the Peclet is large. As an improvement, it is proposed to move the integration nodes along the ‘streamlines’ before evaluating the elementary convection matrices. The displacements of the nodes along the streamlines, which are one-dimensional manifolds, are calculated analogously to well-known one-dimensional formulae. The last section of this paper illustrates this new method with the help of four examples which show its validity.

TL;DR: In this article, the Picker heat capacity microcalorimeter is used for simultaneous measurement of volumetric specific heat capacities and thermal expansion coefficients of liquids, using a simple sequence of operations, in which the calorimeter unit is used alternately to measure a difference in volumeetric specific heats at constant flow rate and temperature, or a flow rate variation resulting from a temperature scan on a flow cell.
Abstract: A flow method is described for the simultaneous measurement of volumetric specific heat capacities c p v and thermal expansion coefficients α of liquids, using a Picker heat capacity microcalorimeter. the method involves a simple sequence of operations in which the calorimeter unit is used alternately to measure a difference in volumetric specific heats at constant flow rate and temperature, or a flow rate variation resulting from a temperature scan on a flow cell. The precision of the method in α measurements is close to 1% which is comparable to that of current dilatometric methods; the overall time for the combined c p v -α measurement is less than 30 minutes. Typical uses and reliability of the method are illustrated through results for aqueous NaCl solutions, t-BuOH-water mixtures, and α,ω-diols (C2−C5) at 25°C. The α and c p v values in homologous series of normal alkanes, alcohols and diols appear well represented by equations comprising two contributions, one related to the hydrocarbon chain length, the other dependent on the number density of −OH groups. The general trends in these data and comparison with similar results for H2O2 and H2O illustrate the magnitude of the c p v and α ‘anomalies’ in liquid water.

TL;DR: The results support Hibbert's findings that the antroadenoid width is a better indicator of the symptom-producing adenoids than adenoid mass measurements with their loosely defined norms.
Abstract: Adenoid hypertrophy has several variable symptoms. In this study, symptoms were divided into minor and major. A lateral radiograph of the nasopharynx was performed in 114 patients to study the superior and antroadenoid diameters. With proper statistical analysis, a correlation was made between the various clinical groups (scores) and the adenoid measurements. Our results support Hibbert's findings that the antroadenoid width is a better indicator of the symptom-producing adenoid than adenoid mass measurements with their loosely defined norms. A thorough history and physical examination remain paramount in the diagnosis and management of adenoid hypertrophy.

TL;DR: This chapter will present an update of the mechanism of the cardiovascular effects of NT, particularly in rats and guinea pigs, and related data published by other workers will be introduced and discussed.
Abstract: Over the last nine years, several studies have shown that neurotensin (NT), a natural tridecapeptide of nervous and intestinal exerts numerous actions on the cardiovascular system of mammals. For instance, in rats,'. rabbits: pigs: goats: and dogs? the peptide was found to produce a decrease in blood pressure while in guinea pigs: woodchucks,1o sheep6, 11 and cats,I2 pressor and biphasic pressor-depressor responses were observed. Changes of heart rate were also described in some y, 1 1 * l3 A few hemodynamic studies with NT have been performed in dogs:, 8* l4 and to a lesser extent, in sheep.\" Other actions of NT related to the cardiovascular system include the following: increase of capillary permeability and cutaneous vasodilation in rats;', positive inotropic and chronotropic effects in isolated atria of rats and guinea pigs;\", l7 vasoconstriction in adipose tissue of dogs,7 in perfused hearts1X and hindquarterslg of rats, and in rat isolated portal veins;\"', 21 and vasodilatation in dog inte~tine.~. l4 So far, in humans, NT has been shown to be inactive on the cardiovascular system, although only relatively low, presumably physiologic doses of the, peptide have been 23 During the last three years, we have tried to elucidate the mechanism of the cardiovascular effects of NT, particularly in rats and guinea pigs. In this chapter, we will present an update of our major findings in this area. Related data published by other workers will be introduced and discussed.

Abstract: The phase behavior at high temperatures of non-polar polymer solutions is discussed in a qualitative way in terms of the free volume theory of liquids developed by Prigogine, Patterson and Flory. This theory is necessary to explain the existence of a Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) in non-polar polymer solutions and the related exothermic heats of mixing. The classical theory of polymer solutions and its limits is first reviewed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the optimal shape of a minimum-weight thermal diffuser with a priori specifications on the inward thermal power flux (TPF) and a bound on the outward TPF was found.
Abstract: The object of this paper is the development of efficient mathematical and numerical tools to find the optimal shape of a minimum-weight thermal diffuser with a priori specifications on the inward thermal power flux (TPF) and a bound on the outward TPF. The present problem arises in connection with the use of high-power solid state devices in future communications satellites. In a space application the thermal power must ultimately be dissipated to the environment by using heatpipes and correspondingly large radiating areas. However, heatpipes can accept only a limited TPF from a source. Hence we have the requirement of a minimum-weight thermal diffuser with a uniform bound on the outward TPF. Shape optimal design and finite elements methods are used. Complete numerical results are provided.

TL;DR: The present study illustrates the very different developmental pattern of catalase activity observed during the development of two anuran amphibians with different development pattern of the same enzyme within the small intestine, liver, kidney, and pancreas in Rana catesbeiana.
Abstract: The ontogeny of catalase-containing organelles was studied by cytochemical and biochemical methods in the liver, kidney, and pancreas during the development of Rana catesbeiana. The biochemical differentiation of peroxisomes in the liver and kidney was compared to that of Xenupus laeuis. Catalase activity was localized after incubation in DAB medium and studied biochemically by a spectrophotometric method. In Rana catesbeiana the number of catalase-pos-itive organelles per cell section is low in all three organs during premetamorphosis; their number increases substantially in the liver and kidney of froglets, while it remains almost stable in the pancreas. No further increase is observed in the adult. Biochemically, the liver, kidney, and pancreas of tadpoles exhibit, respectively, 12, 22, and 63% of the catalase activity found in the adult tissues. After metamorphosis an important increase of catalase activity is particularly noted in liver and kidney, the activity being, respectively, 43 and 77% of that of adult bullfrogs. On the other hand, no change in catalase activity in the liver and kidney is noted during the entire development of Xenopus laeuis. The present study illustrates the very different developmental pattern of catalase activity observed during the development of two anuran amphibians. The different developmental pattern of the same enzyme within the small intestine, liver, kidney, and pancreas in Rana catesbeiana is also stressed.

TL;DR: The present study shows that the number of microperoxisomes as well as the catalase activity increases with the maturation of the intestinal epithelial cells in developing anuran amphibians.
Abstract: The ontogeny of intestinal microperoxisomes was studied by cytochemical and biochemical methods during the development of two anuran amphibian species (Rana catesbeiana and Alytes obstetricans). The catalase activity was localized after incubation in DAB medium and studied biochemically by a spectrophotometric method. Microperoxisomes were found to be present in the intestinal epithelial cells of these amphibians. The primary enterocytes of aquatic larvae showed very few microperoxisomes. After metamorphosis the absorptive cells of the new secondary epithelium exhibited a drastically increased number of microperoxisomes per cell section. These organelles showed circular profiles and had a diameter ranging from 0.36 to 0.40 μm. The intestinal catalase activity was low in the tadpoles, increased steadily after metamorphosis, and peaked in the adults. Moreover, at eath developmental stage, the proximal segments always exhibited the highest catalase activity. The present study shows that the number of microperoxisomes as well as the catalase activity increases with the maturation of the intestinal epithelial cells in developing anuran amphibians.

Abstract: A simple method to synthesise dual-feedback ideal op-amp oscillator circuits is presented. Based on two theorems, this method permits us to synthesise three different oscillator circuits from the knowledge of one circuit. As an example, starting from the well known Wien-bridge oscillator, three other forms of Wien-bridge oscillators are derived.

TL;DR: A statistical analysis of variance showed that there were no statistical differences between the groups during the first and last two weeks of placebo therapy, while during the active treatment period, weeks 3 and 4, there were statistically significant differences among the three groups.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of oxaprozin (4,5-diphenyl-2-oxazolepropionic acid), a nonsteroidal, antiinflammatory compound, and aspirin in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to estimate gastrointestinal bleeding. The determination of fecal blood loss was made quantitatively by the use of the radioactive (51Cr) technique. During the first week, subjects were controlled with and without placebo. At the end of the second week, the subjects were divided and randomly assigned to one of three groups; 10 received 1200 mg oxaprozin (600 mg twice daily), 11 received 3900 mg aspirin (975 mg four times a day), and the remaining 8 subjects received placebo for two weeks. During the last two weeks, all received placebo again. A statistical analysis of variance showed that there were no statistical differences between the groups during the first and last two weeks of placebo therapy. During the active treatment period, weeks 3 and 4, there were statistically significant differences among the three groups. The mean blood loss during week 3 was significantly greater for the aspirin group, 8.8 ml/day, than the oxaprozin group, 3.3 ml/day (P less than 0.05), and the placebo group, 1.4 ml/day (P less than 0.001). The smaller difference between oxaprozin and placebo was also significant (P less than 0.05). During the fourth week, the mean daily blood loss among oxaprozin patients had decreased to 2.3 ml/day, and no statistically significant difference from placebo (1.1 ml/day) was found.
