Abstract: A novel coating for medical devices provides nitric oxide delivery using nanofibers of linear poly(ethylenimine)diazeniumdiolate. Linear poly(ethylenimine)diazeniumdiolate releases nitric oxide (NO) in a controlled manner to tissues and organs to aid the healing process and to prevent injury to tissues at risk of injury. Electrospun nano-fibers of linear poly(ethylenimine) diazeniumdiolate deliver therapeutic levels of NO to the tissues surrounding a medical device while minimizing the alteration of the properties of the device. A nanofiber coating, because of the small size and large surface area per unit mass of the nanofibers, provides a much larger surface area per unit mass while minimizing changes in other properties of the device.

Abstract: [1] We present the first direct comparison and calibration of a downcore foraminiferal Mg/Ca record to historical instrumental sea surface temperature (SST). Mg/Ca measured on the planktic foraminifer Globigerina bulloides from a Cariaco Basin sediment core strongly correlate with spring (March–May) instrumental SSTs between A.D. 1870 and 1990. A Mg/Ca SST equation is derived and a paleo-SST record is presented spanning the last 8 centuries, an interval that includes the end of the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. The long-term record displays a surprising amount of variability. The temperature swings are not necessarily related to local upwelling variability but instead represent wider conditions in the Caribbean and western tropical Atlantic. The Mg/Ca SST record also captures the decadal and multidecadal variability observed in records of global land and sea surface temperature anomalies and Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane frequency over the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A divergence between the SST proxy record and Atlantic storm frequency around 1970 appears to reflect a fundamental change in Atlantic hurricane behavior noted in historical data. On average, twentieth-century temperatures are not the warmest in the entire record, but they do show the largest increase in magnitude and fastest rate of SST change over the last 800 a.

Abstract: The lack of well-defined and standardized terms for urban settlements in China has created much confusion among Chinese as well as Western scholars regarding the size of China's urban population and the nation's urbanization level. In this paper we identify the major types of China's urban population and explain their relationships to areal units. The aggregate population of the officially designated cities and towns, which has been widely used in China and elsewhere as an indicator of China's urbanization level, should no longer be used because of changes after 1979 in the designation of urban areas; these changes had the effect of adding agricultural households to the urban population. According to the official indicator, China's population was 31.9 percent urban in 1984. A more realistic measure of urbanization, which excludes the agricultural population of cities and towns, shows that China was actually 15.7 percent urban in 1984.

Abstract: This paper considers the development of transient solution algorithms for finite element simulations of viscoelastic problems involving fractional integrodifferential operators. Specifically, numerical approximations are developed for the Grunwald-Liouville-Riemann formalism. This includes establishing formal error estimations. Based on the numerical representations of the fractional operators, implicit, explicit and predictor corrector type transient algorithms are derived for viscoelastic finite element simulations. To illustrate their computational properties, the results of several numerical benchmark experiments are presented. These emphasize the efficiency and stability of the various algorithms developed.
