Abstract: Greenlandic has had a written language since the first translations of The Bible in the second quarter of the eighteenth century. The first dictionary was Paul Egede: Dictionarium gronlandico-danico-latinum, 1750. Then in the middle of the nineteenth century a consistent etymological orthography was constructed (Samuel Kleinschmidt: Den gronlandske Ordbog, 1870). This is known as ‘the old orthography’. In 1973 it was replaced by a phonemic orthography, known as ‘the new orthography’ (see e.g. ‘Ordbogi’, C. Berthelsen et al. 1977).
