TL;DR: The T2K experiment as discussed by the authors is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment whose main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle by observing its appearance in a particle beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator.
Abstract: The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing { u}_e appearance in a { u}_{\mu} beam It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via { u}_{\mu} disappearance studies Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC This paper provides a comprehensive review of the instrumentation aspect of the T2K experiment and a summary of the vital information for each subsystem

TL;DR: Several previously unsuspected key links between multiple ESCRT subunits, phospholipids and ubiquitin have now been elucidated, which, together with the detailed morphological analyses of ESCRT-depletion phenotypes, provide new insights into the mechanism of MVB biogenesis.
Abstract: The past two years have seen an explosion in the structural understanding of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery that facilitates the trafficking of ubiquitylated proteins from endosomes to lysosomes via multivesicular bodies (MVBs). A common organization of all ESCRTs is a rigid core attached to flexibly connected modules that recognize other components of the MVB pathway. Several previously unsuspected key links between multiple ESCRT subunits, phospholipids and ubiquitin have now been elucidated, which, together with the detailed morphological analyses of ESCRT-depletion phenotypes, provide new insights into the mechanism of MVB biogenesis.

TL;DR: A continuous record of atmospheric lead since 12,370 carbon-14 years before the present (14C yr BP) is preserved in a Swiss peat bog, indicating the beginning of lead pollution from mining and smelting, and anthropogenic sources have dominated lead emissions ever since.
Abstract: A continuous record of atmospheric lead since 12,370 carbon-14 years before the present (14C yr BP) is preserved in a Swiss peat bog. Enhanced fluxes caused by climate changes reached their maxima 10,590 14C yr BP (Younger Dryas) and 823014C yr BP. Soil erosion caused by forest clearing and agricultural tillage increased lead deposition after 532014C yr BP. Increasing lead/scandium and decreasing lead-206/lead-207 beginning 3000 14C yr BP indicate the beginning of lead pollution from mining and smelting, and anthropogenic sources have dominated lead emissions ever since. The greatest lead flux (15.7 milligrams per square meter per year in A.D. 1979) was 1570 times the natural, background value (0.01 milligram per square meter per year from 8030 to 5320 14C yr BP).
