Its amino-acid substitution is in the haem pocket of the α chain, homologous in position to that in Haemoglobin Hammersmith (β CDI Phe→Ser). The two disease states differ and an explanation is attempted in terms of molecular structure.

Abstract: The chromosomes of 27 animals belonging to 11 species of the genus Cercopithecus were studied.The number of chromosomes for the different species studied, varies from a minimum of 2n=54 to a max. of 2n=72. In individuals belonging to the same species, a different number of chromosomes has been noted.The morphological analysis did not reveal any clear relation between the total number of chromosomes and the number of acrocentric chromosomes.The total length of the caryotype measured on 20 metaphase plates, increases with the increase of the number of the chromosomes.On the basis of these two data I suggest the hypothesis that the variation in the number of the chromosomes of the genus Cercopithecus is originated by the reduplication of single chromosomes.

Abstract: — The ChAc activity of spinal and sympathetic ganglia was measured throughout the embryonic life of the chick.
In spinal ganglia, the ChAc activity reached a first peak when the maximal proliferation of neuroblasts occurred. Then, the relative ChAc activity decreased. After the 12th day of incubation, the enzyme activity increased again and reached a second peak on the 16th day.
In sympathetic ganglia, the general course of the development of ChAc activity was similar to spinal ganglia. However, higher enzymic activity was found. Furthermore, the earlier peak of ChAc activity occurred 48 hr later than the corresponding peak in spinal ganglia.
The behaviour of ChAc activity in these two areas of the developing nervous system is interpreted as a function of their histogenesis.

Abstract: Renal excretion of phosphorus was studied in 52 acromegalic patients by means of the phosphate excretion index (PEI) described by Nordin and Fraser. Forty-eight patients were classified as having “active” acromegaly and 69% of these had PEI values below the lower limit of the range of a control series (39 subjects), whereas only 29% had plasma phosphorus values above the upper limit of the range of the controls. Postoperative PEI and plasma phosphorus values in patients classed as “inactive” after intrasellar implantation of 90Y, and who had normal adrenocortical function, were within normal limits. PEI also returned to normal in 7 patients classified as “improved.”

Abstract: IT is generally agreed that at least some lymphocytes carry immunoglobulins with antibody properties on their surface. It is still a matter of discussion whether or not these immunoglobulins are synthesized by the cell itself, and whether their presence is related to lymphocyte immunocompetence. It has been shown, however, that lymphoid cells from subjects immunized against bacteria are able to immobilize the specific antigen on their surface. Nevertheless, because of technical difficulties, it is very hard to demonstrate directly the presence of gamma globulins on the cell membrane; even very sensitive methods, such as immunonuorescence, have given variable and inconsistent results1,2.

Abstract: The results of studies done to ascertain whether the rate of protoporphyrin synthesis from δ-aminolaevulic acid is decreased in iron deficiency anaemia and whether iron is essential for the synthesis of the intermediate compounds in the porphyrin metabolism are reported. By measuring the urinary δ-amino-laevulic acid, porphobilinogen, coproporphyrin and uroporphyrin excretion and the faecal coproporphyrin and protoporphyrin excretion a decrease in the rate of porphyrin synthesis was demonstrated in cases of idiopathic hypochromic anaemia. The relative increase in the urinary porphobilinogen excretion points to a partial block of porphyrin synthesis from porphobilinogen. Iron treatment normalises the porphyrin metabolism.

Abstract: Non-specific esterase has been histochemically studied in 45 cerebral tumors of neurosurgical source. Different substrates and couplers as well as several effectors have been used. The E 600-resistant enzyme activity behaves like acid phosphatase and appears to be in relation with the catabolic or regressive occurrences. This association explains its high value in anaplastic tumors. Also the E 600-sensitive enzyme activity increases with malignancy, but it appears rather in relation with the volume of the cytoplasms. The different oncotypes and cytotypes are discussed in the light of the obtained results.

Whether this may be due to historical circumstances, or to a peculiar bent of the English mind, is a fascinating question; but it is not the one which I propose to discuss here today. I am mentioning it only to explain the choice of my subject, a subject which would probably sound rather uncommon to an Italian audience, but which, I am sure, has a familiar ring to English ears. Abstract: The evolution of hepatic microscopic nodules in hatchery rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fed diets containing aflatoxin has been studied. After 13 months of feeding, the histopathological examination showed microscopic nodules in the liver of 22–26 per cent of trout, wich had been fed diets containing high levels of aflatoxin. At this time a group of trout was fed a non carcinogenic diet (fresh beef liver), for other 13 months. The trials were carried out in water with a constant temperature of 8–9°C. Even though the carcinogenic stimulus was removed, trout produced hepatic tumors in 50–54 per cent of examined samples. The authors conclude that the micro-nodules, early found in the liver of trout fed carcinogenic diet, are to be considered as true neoplasms.

Abstract: . Merino 62’s wool was prepared and purified as pre. viously described [9]. The determination of the N-terminal amino acids was by dinitrophenylation [10]. The chromatographic separation of the DNP amino acids was performed by bidnpensional thin-layer chromatography on Kieselgel G (Merck AG Darmstadt). For the quantitative determination, the spots of the DNP amino acids were extracted with dimethytformamide, acetic acid, water, and ethanol (1/2/6/4) and the optical absorbance was recorded at 366 nm on a Beckman DU spectrophotometer. The final results were achieved by computing the hydrolysis losses according to the value reported by Middlebrook [10]. The determination of the C-terminal amino acids was by hydrazinolysis [3]. After the separation of the hydrazides by chromatography on Amberlite IR-120, the ter’ minal amino acids were dinitrophenylated and determined in the same manner as the N-terminal amino acids. The determination of lanthionine was performed on hydrolyzed samples with 5.7 N HCI for 24 hr at 105°C in sealed tubes. Thin-layer chromatography separation and determination was according to the method previously reported [8]. -
