Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of fatty acid composition of raw materials on biodiesel properties.
TL;DR: A triangular graph based on the composition in monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated methyl esters was built in order to predict the critical parameters of European standard for whatever biodiesel, known its composition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biofuels: a technological perspective
Rafael Luque,Rafael Luque,Lorenzo Herrero-Davila,Juan M. Campelo,James H. Clark,José M. Hidalgo,Diego Luna,José M. Marinas,Antonio A. Romero +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a brief overview of the complex biofuel issue, providing the latest update of the production and potential of biofuels in the transport sector including types of biofuel, feedstocks and technologies and some of the possible socioeconomic, environmental and political implications of the widespread use of bio fuels in our society.
Journal ArticleDOI
Synthesis of biodiesel from waste vegetable oil with large amounts of free fatty acids using a carbon-based solid acid catalyst
TL;DR: A carbon-based solid acid catalyst was used to simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification to synthesis biodiesel when a waste vegetable oil with large amounts of free fatty acids (FFAs) was used as feedstock as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of metal based additive on performance emission and combustion characteristics of diesel engine fuelled with biodiesel
TL;DR: In this article, the use of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) as a fuel borne catalyst (FBC) for waste cooking palm oil based biodiesel was investigated, and the results revealed that the FBC added biodiesel resulted in a decreased brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of 86% while the brake thermal efficiency increased by 63%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biodiesel production from biomass of an oleaginous fungus
Gemma Vicente,L. Fernando Bautista,Rosalía Rodríguez,F. Javier Gutiérrez,Irantzu Sádaba,Rosa M. Ruiz-Vázquez,Santiago Torres-Martínez,Victoriano Garre +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduced the filamentous fungus Mucor circinelloides as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production, which showed a high content (>85%) of saponifiable matter and a suitable fatty acid profile.

Variables affecting the yields of fatty esters from transesterified vegetable oils
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors showed that the conversion to methyl, ethyl and butyl esters from cottonseed, peanut, soybean and sunflower oils can be done in 1 hr with an alkaline catalyst.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biodiesel production from waste cooking oil: 1. Process design and technological assessment
TL;DR: The acid-catalyzed process using waste cooking oil proved to be technically feasible with less complexity than the alkali-catalystzed process, thereby making it a competitive alternative to commercial biodiesel production by the alkaline-catalyszed process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrated biodiesel production: a comparison of different homogeneous catalysts systems.
TL;DR: Although all the transesterification reactions were quite rapid and the biodiesel layers achieved nearly 100% methyl ester concentrations, the reactions using sodium hydroxide turned out the fastest.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimisation of biodiesel production by sunflower oil transesterification
TL;DR: In this work, sunflower methyl esters were characterised to test their properties as fuels in diesel engines, such as viscosity, flash point, cold filter plugging point and acid value, and showed that biodiesel obtained under the optimum conditions is an excellent substitute for fossil fuels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Application of the factorial design of experiments and response surface methodology to optimize biodiesel production
TL;DR: In this paper, the production of fatty acid methyl esters, to be used as a diesel substitute (biodiesel), has been studied, where the reaction of refined sunflower oil and methanol was carried out over different types (acid and basic, homogeneous and heterogeneous) of catalysts.
