Biodiesel production from biomass of an oleaginous fungus
Gemma Vicente,L. Fernando Bautista,Rosalía Rodríguez,F. Javier Gutiérrez,Irantzu Sádaba,Rosa M. Ruiz-Vázquez,Santiago Torres-Martínez,Victoriano Garre +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduced the filamentous fungus Mucor circinelloides as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production, which showed a high content (>85%) of saponifiable matter and a suitable fatty acid profile.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expansion of Signal Transduction Pathways in Fungi by Extensive Genome Duplication.
Luis M. Corrochano,Alan Kuo,Marina Marcet-Houben,Silvia Polaino,Asaf Salamov,José Manuel Villalobos-Escobedo,Jane Grimwood,M. Isabel Isabel Álvarez,Javier Avalos,Diane Bauer,Ernesto P. TL;DR: The genome duplication provided the means to improve signal transduction for enhanced perception of environmental signals and will help to understand the role of genome dynamics in the evolution of sensory perception in eukaryotes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Two classes of small antisense RNAs in fungal RNA silencing triggered by non‐integrative transgenes
TL;DR: Small sense and antisense RNAs have been found to be associated with gene silencing in M.circinelloides, revealing the existence of spreading of RNA targeting in fungi and making it a suitable organism for investigating some unresolved questions in RNA silencing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antifungal drug resistance evoked via RNAi-dependent epimutations
Silvia Calo,Cecelia Shertz-Wall,Soo Chan Lee,Robert J. Bastidas,Francisco E. Nicolás,Joshua A. Granek,Piotr A. Mieczkowski,Santiago Torres-Martínez,Rosa M. Ruiz-Vázquez,Maria E. Cardenas,Joseph Heitman +10 more
TL;DR: This study uncovers a novel epigenetic RNAi-based epimutation mechanism controlling phenotypic plasticity, with possible implications for antimicrobial drug resistance andRNAi-regulatory mechanisms in fungi and other eukaryotes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sporangiospore size dimorphism is linked to virulence of Mucor circinelloides.
Charles H. Li,María Cervantes,Deborah J. Springer,Teun Boekhout,Rosa M. Ruiz-Vázquez,Santiago Torres-Martínez,Joseph Heitman,Soo Chan Lee +7 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that spore size dimorphism is linked to virulence of M. circinelloides species and that plasticity of the sex locus and adaptations in pathogenicity have occurred during speciation of the M. circulatelloides complex.
