TLDR
The serum total and free cholesterol levels of 200 blood donors measured with the new color reaction were found to agree well with normal values reported by others and validates its use for either clinical or research purposes.

Myelination in rat brain: changes in myelin composition during brain maturation

TL;DR: Myelin deposition appeared to be almost solely responsible for the continued increase in brain weight after about 100 days of age, and the rate of accumulation of cerebroside in the whole brain paralleled that of myelin, and was the only lipid to show this relationship.

Hypolipidemic action of curcumin, the active principle of turmeric (Curcuma longa) in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats

TL;DR: Dietary curcumin showed a distinct tendency to counter changes in lipid fractions of liver and liver cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid contents were elevated under diabetic conditions and was seen in diabetic animals maintained on high cholesterol diet.

Plasma Membrane Vesiculation: A New Technique for Isolation of Plasma Membranes

Robert E. Scott
- 12 Nov 1976 -
TL;DR: The technique is proposed as a novel method for isolating plasma membrane vesicles from cells in culture for isolation of cytoplasmic organelles following exposure to formaldehyde, related low-molecular-weight aldehydes, and disulfide blocking agents.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of manipulation of iron storage, transport, or availability on myelin composition and brain iron content in three different animal models.

TL;DR: Overall, the results of this study demonstrate how myelin composition can be affected by loss of iron homeostasis and reveal specific chronic changes inMyelin composition that may affect behavior and attempts to rescue myelin deficits.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of curcumin on serum and liver cholesterol levels in the rat.

TL;DR: The effect of curcumin in keeping down cholesterol in conditions which otherwise induced hypercholesteremia was not through alterations in cecal microflora which are known to dismute and utilize bile acids in the gut.

A new method for the direct determination of serum cholesterol.

TL;DR: Precision and reproducibility are demonstrated as well as the absorption characteristics of the purple color produced through the spectral range of 400 to 700 mμ.

Simplified Rapid Technic for the Extraction and Determination of Serum Cholesterol without Saponification

TL;DR: An accurate yet simple procedure for the determination of total cholesterol, based upon the application of a Liebermann-Burchard color reaction directly in the solvent employed for extraction of cholesterol from serum, has been described.
