Journal ArticleDOI
Cardioprotection after myocardial infarction
TL;DR: On the basis of these findings, beta blockers, thrombolytic agents, acetylsalicylic acid, and anticoagulants can be recommended for all patients without obvious contraindications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Successful spleno-renal shunt and splenectomy in two patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
TL;DR: Based on the experience with these 2 patients, it appears that alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency with cirrhosis is not a valid contraindication to the performance of a portasystemic shunt.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential effects of portal diversion on hepatocyte function (HF) and hepatic reticuloendothelial cell (HRES) activity in the dog
TL;DR: End-to-side portocaval shunts were constructed in six dogs to evaluate the effect of complete portal blood flow diversion on hepatocellular structure and function, hepatic reticuloendothelial activity, and serum opsonic activity, finding that Kupffer cells may be less dependent than hepatocytes upon hepatotrophic factors contained in portal blood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistence of serogroup C antibody responses following quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccination in United States military personnel.
Manisha Patel,Sandra Romero-Steiner,Michael P. Broderick,Cynthia G. Thomas,Brian D. Plikaytis,Daniel S. Schmidt,Scott E. Johnson,Andrea S. Milton,George M. Carlone,Thomas A. Clark,Nancy E. Messonnier,Amanda C. Cohn,Dennis J. Faix +12 more
TL;DR: Anti-MenC responses wane following vaccination with MenACYWD; a booster dose is needed to maintain protective levels of circulating antibody.

Manifestations of Immunologic Unresponsiveness in Hodgkin's Disease
TL;DR: It is suggested that the anergy of early Hodgkin's disease is a peripheral defect; a manifestation of abnormal lymphocyte function; this suggestion is supported by preliminary work with Hodgkins lymphocytes in vitro and following lymphocyte transfer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zinc deficiency: effect on brain of the suckling rat.
TL;DR: Zinc deficiency has been showed to impair DNA and protein synthesis in brain of the suckling rat as it has previously been shown to do in other tissues including liver and epiphyseal plate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Symptomatic pulmonary emphysema in childhood associated with hereditary alpha-1-antitrypsin and elastase inhibitor deficiency.
Richard C. Talamo,Henry Levison,Matthew J. Lynch,Albert Hercz,Newton E. Hyslop,Harry W. Bain +5 more
TL;DR: Genetic studies of sera from 55 family members were performed by means of functional assays of elastase inhibition and total antitryptic activity and by measurements of alpha-1-antitrypsin concentration with a newly developed sensitive electroimmunodiffusion method.
