Caveats for the Use of Citation Indicators in Research and Journal Evaluations

TLDR
The assumption that citation and publication practices are homogenous within specialties and fields of science is invalid and the delineation of fields and among specialties is fuzzy.
Abstract
Ageing of publications, percentage of self-citations, and impact vary from journal to journal within fields of science. The assumption that citation and publication practices are homogenous within specialties and fields of science is invalid. Furthermore, the delineation of fields and among specialties is fuzzy. Institutional units of analysis and persons may move between fields or span different specialties. The match between the citation index and institutional profiles varies among institutional units and nations. The respective matches may heavily affect the representation of the units. Non-ISI journals are increasingly cornered into "transdisciplinary" Mode-2 functions with the exception of specialist journals publishing in languages other than English. An "externally cited impact factor" can be calculated for these journals. The citation impact of non-ISI journals will be demonstrated using Science and Public Policy as the example.

On an approach to boosting a journal’s citation potential

TL;DR: Investigation of the correlation between RFVj and a journal’s cumulative citation counts with a longer citation time window indicates that RFVJ has a statistically significant correlation with TCj, based on which it is argued that by improving itsRFVj a journal can improve its TCj.

The indices of scientific productivity and ratings of domestic universities

TL;DR: The indices of scientific productivity and citation of the teaching staff (teaching staff) of universities, reflected in the Web of Science, Essential Science Indicators, Journal Citation Reports, or SCOPUS DBs, are noted to be an important component of these ratings.

Obsolescence of the literature: A study of included studies in Cochrane reviews:

TL;DR: It is found that the median citation age and the mean citation age differ considerably across groups, and the subfield categorisation from Cochrane review groups found larger differences across subfields than in the citing half-lives published by Journal Citation Reports.

Bibliometric evaluation of scientific literature in the area of research in education using incites™ database of thomson reuters

TL;DR: InCitesTM is currently the only available tool that allows to aggregate data concerning citations that would be divided into areas, journals and scientific institutions, using multi-criteria search.

Correlating article citedness and journal impact: an empirical investigation by field on a large-scale dataset

TL;DR: In this article , the authors investigate the correlation between the citedness of a publication and the impact of the host journal and assess whether this correlation varies across fields and is stronger for highly cited authors than for lowly cited ones.

The Strength of Weak Ties

TL;DR: In this paper, it is argued that the degree of overlap of two individuals' friendship networks varies directly with the strength of their tie to one another, and the impact of this principle on diffusion of influence and information, mobility opportunity, and community organization is explored.

An index to quantify an individual's scientific research output

TL;DR: The index h, defined as the number of papers with citation number ≥h, is proposed as a useful index to characterize the scientific output of a researcher.

A Set of Measures of Centrality Based on Betweenness

TL;DR: A family of new measures of point and graph centrality based on early intuitions of Bavelas (1948) is introduced in this paper, which define centrality in terms of the degree to which a point falls on the shortest path between others and there fore has a potential for control of communication.

The New Production of Knowledge: The Dynamics of Science and Research in Contemporary Societies

TL;DR: The authors argued that the ways in which knowledge is produced are undergoing fundamental changes at the end of the twentieth century and that these changes mark a distinct shift into a new mode of knowledge production which is replacing or reforming established institutions, disciplines, practices and policies.
