Journal ArticleDOI
Activities of vancomycin and teicoplanin against penicillin-resistant pneumococci in vitro and in vivo and correlation to pharmacokinetic parameters in the mouse peritonitis model.
TL;DR: The effect of glycopeptides was not influenced by the penicillin resistance of the pneumococci, either in vitro or in vivo, and that the superior activity of teicoplanin over that of vancomycin in vitro was abolished in vitro, an effect which probably was due to the high serum protein binding of teioplanin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Penicillin Dosing for Pneumococcal Pneumonia
TL;DR: Issues concerning penicillin dosing are reviewed: intermittent vs continuous therapy, high dose vs low dose, relationship of dose to resistance, and cost-effective pharmacology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Can N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids be considered a potential adjuvant therapy for COVID-19-associated cardiovascular complications?
TL;DR: An overview of the pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications secondary to COVID-19 is provided and the mechanisms that may contribute to the likely benefits of n-3 PUFAs and their metabolites are focused on.
Journal ArticleDOI
A prediction rule for elderly primary-care patients with lower respiratory tract infections
TL;DR: A prediction rule is developed and validated for the prognosis of acute LRTI in elderly primary-care patients that can help thePrimary-care physician to differentiate between high- and low-risk patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Viral etiology of community-acquired pneumonia among adolescents and adults with mild or moderate severity and its relation to age and severity
TL;DR: The proportion of RVs in CAP is higher than previously reported, and pandemic H1N1 virus is still recognized by PSI as a high-severity pathogen.

Mortality, morbidity, and psychosocial outcomes of persons spinal cord injured more than 20 years ago.
Gale G. Whiteneck,Susan Charlifue,Hans L. Frankel,M H Fraser,B P Gardner,Kenneth A. Gerhart,K R Krishnan,Robert R. Menter,I Nuseibeh,D J Short,John Russell Silver +10 more
TL;DR: Declines with age were found in measures of handicap and life satisfaction, but three quarters of those interviewed reported generally good health and rated their current quality of life as either good or excellent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Causes of death during the first 12 years after spinal cord injury
TL;DR: Though some cause-specific mortality rates for spinal cord injured persons have declined dramatically, many remain substantially above normal and improved methods for preventing and managing these fatal complications must be developed.

Risk factors for Clostridium difficile carriage and C. difficile-associated diarrhea in a cohort of hospitalized patients
TL;DR: C. difficile was a common Nosocomial infection on this ward, resulting in asymptomatic carriage more often than diarrhea and accounting for one-fifth of all cases of nosocomial diarrhea.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk Factors for Clostridium difficile Carriage and C. difficile-Associated Diarrhea in a Cohort of Hospitalized Patients
TL;DR: In this paper, a prospective cohort study of 399 consecutive patients in a single ward over an 11-month period was conducted to identify risk factors for nosocomial C. difficile colonization and diarrhea.
Journal ArticleDOI
Successful control of Clostridium difficile infection in an elderly care unit through use of a restrictive antibiotic policy.
Cliodna A. M. McNulty,Margaret Logan,Ian P. Donald,Debbie Ennis,Denise Taylor,R. N. Baldwin,Mira Bannerjee,Keith A. V. Cartwright +7 more
TL;DR: The use of narrow-spectrum antibiotics for hospital treatment of community-acquired infections in the elderly should be encouraged.
