A Non-Human Primate Model of Severe Pneumococcal Pneumonia.
Luis F. Reyes,Luis F. Reyes,Marcos I. Restrepo,Cecilia A. Hinojosa,Cecilia A. Hinojosa,Nilam J. Soni,Nilam J. Soni,Anukul T. Shenoy,Ryan P. Gilley,Norberto Gonzalez-Juarbe,Julio Noda,Julio Noda,Vicki T. Winter,Melissa De La Garza,Robert E. Shade,Jacqueline J. Coalson,Luis D. Giavedoni,Antonio Anzueto,Carlos J. Orihuela +18 more
TL;DR: A novel animal model for severe pneumococcal pneumonia that mimics the clinical presentation, inflammatory response, and infection kinetics seen in humans is developed and is a novel model to test vaccines and treatments, measure biomarkers to diagnose pneumonia, and predict outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decreased plasma phospholipid concentrations and increased acid sphingomyelinase activity are accurate biomarkers for community-acquired pneumonia.
Haroon Arshad,Juan Carlos López Alfonso,Raimo Franke,Katina Michaelis,Leonardo Silva de Araujo,Aamna Habib,Yuliya Zboromyrska,Eva Lücke,Emilia Strungaru,Manas K. Akmatov,Haralampos Hatzikirou,Michael Meyer-Hermann,Astrid Petersmann,Matthias Nauck,Mark Brönstrup,Ursula Bilitewski,Laurent Abel,Laurent Abel,Laurent Abel,Jörg Sievers,Jörg Sievers,Jordi Vila,Thomas Illig,Jens Schreiber,Frank Pessler +24 more
TL;DR: The results underscore the high potential of plasma phospholipids as biomarkers for CAP, begin to reveal differences in lipid dysregulation between CAP and infection-associated COPD exacerbation, and suggest that the decreases in plasma concentrations are at least partially determined by changes in host target cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Etiological analysis and predictive diagnostic model building of community-acquired pneumonia in adult outpatients in Beijing, China
TL;DR: While predictive etiological diagnostic models of viral and mycoplasma pneumoniae based on combinations of demographic and clinical factors may provide indications of etiology, diagnostic confirmation of CAP remains dependent on laboratory pathogen test results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of efficacy of Oseltamivir-Azithromycin combination therapy in prevention of Influenza-A (H1N1)pdm09 infection complications and rapidity of symptoms relief.
Azfar Athar Ishaqui,Azfar Athar Ishaqui,Amer Hayat Khan,Syed Azhar Syed Sulaiman,Muhammad Taher Alsultan,Irfanullah Khan,Atta Abbas Naqvi,Atta Abbas Naqvi +7 more
TL;DR: Oseltamivir-Azithromycin combination therapy was found to be more efficacious as compared to oseltAMivir alone in rapid recovery and prevention of Influenza associated complications especially in high risk patients.
Journal Article
How reliable are Australian Childhood Immunisation Register coverage estimates for indigenous children? An assessment of data quality and coverage.
Claudia Rank,Robert Menzies +1 more
TL;DR: This study shows that the reporting of indigenous status has improved from 42% of the estimated national cohort of Indigenous children aged 12 to 14 months in 2002 to 95% in 2005, and vaccination coverage estimates for Indigenous children can now be used with confidence for program planning at the national and jurisdictional level.

Mortality, morbidity, and psychosocial outcomes of persons spinal cord injured more than 20 years ago.
Gale G. Whiteneck,Susan Charlifue,Hans L. Frankel,M H Fraser,B P Gardner,Kenneth A. Gerhart,K R Krishnan,Robert R. Menter,I Nuseibeh,D J Short,John Russell Silver +10 more
TL;DR: Declines with age were found in measures of handicap and life satisfaction, but three quarters of those interviewed reported generally good health and rated their current quality of life as either good or excellent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Causes of death during the first 12 years after spinal cord injury
TL;DR: Though some cause-specific mortality rates for spinal cord injured persons have declined dramatically, many remain substantially above normal and improved methods for preventing and managing these fatal complications must be developed.

Risk factors for Clostridium difficile carriage and C. difficile-associated diarrhea in a cohort of hospitalized patients
TL;DR: C. difficile was a common Nosocomial infection on this ward, resulting in asymptomatic carriage more often than diarrhea and accounting for one-fifth of all cases of nosocomial diarrhea.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk Factors for Clostridium difficile Carriage and C. difficile-Associated Diarrhea in a Cohort of Hospitalized Patients
TL;DR: In this paper, a prospective cohort study of 399 consecutive patients in a single ward over an 11-month period was conducted to identify risk factors for nosocomial C. difficile colonization and diarrhea.
Journal ArticleDOI
Successful control of Clostridium difficile infection in an elderly care unit through use of a restrictive antibiotic policy.
Cliodna A. M. McNulty,Margaret Logan,Ian P. Donald,Debbie Ennis,Denise Taylor,R. N. Baldwin,Mira Bannerjee,Keith A. V. Cartwright +7 more
TL;DR: The use of narrow-spectrum antibiotics for hospital treatment of community-acquired infections in the elderly should be encouraged.
