Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution of Placental Function in Mammals: The Molecular Basis of Gas and Nutrient Transfer, Hormone Secretion, and Immune Responses

TL;DR: Coevolution in the primate lineage of killer immunoglobulin-like receptors and human leukocyte antigens can be linked to the deep invasion of the uterus by trophoblast that is a characteristic feature of human placentation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pulmonary intravascular macrophages in domestic animal species: review of structural and functional properties.

TL;DR: Review of recent studies indicates that PIMs are a resident cell population, junctionally adherent to the capillary endothelium of lungs and morphologically similar to hepatic Kupffer cells, a pulmonary constituent of the mononuclear phagocyte system with respect to secretory, endocytic, and functional properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

An embryonic pattern of expression of a human fetal globin gene in transgenic mice.

TL;DR: It is reported here that the human Gγ gene reverts to an embryonic pattern of expression in the developing mouse, suggesting that during evolution a shift occurred in the timing of expression of a trans-acting signal controlling the proto-γ gene.
Book ChapterDOI

Clinicopathologic Principles for Veterinary Medicine: The hematopoietic system

TL;DR: The hematopoietic system is composed of a remarkable variety of cells, including those circulating in the blood and their ancestors in marrow and progeny in the tissues as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

The structure and transcription of four linked rabbit β-like globin genes

TL;DR: Determination of the nucleotide sequence of gene β1 confirms that this gene corresponds to the second type of two common co-dominant alleles encoding the adult β-globin chain, and partial DNA sequence analysis indicates that the large intron in β4 is located between codons for amino acids lysine and leucine in an analogous position to that of the largeintron inβ1.

The separation of human and animal hemoglobins by isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel.

TL;DR: A small-scale technique for isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels was used to separate hemoglobins in human and animal hemolysates, indicating that this technique offers a significant advance for high resolution separations of hemoglOBins and a means for characterizing hemoglobin variants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Life-span of the fetal red blood cell

TL;DR: A life-span of about 70 days is indicated for the survival of fetal red cells, which may reflect a pattern of erythrocyte maturation similar to that occurring in situations evoking "stress ERYthrocytes" in later life.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Amino Acid Composition of Hemoglobin. III. A Qualitative Method for Identifying Abnormalities of the Polypeptide Chains of Hemoglobin

TL;DR: A relatively simple method is described which permits the identification of abnormalities of either polypeptide chain of hemoglobin or hemoglobin in a barbital buffer at pH 8.0.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hemoglobin C in Newborn Sheep and Goats : A Possible Explanation for its Function and Biosynthesis

TL;DR: It is postulated that the production of βC chain-containing hemoglobin types in the newborn kid is a physiological adjustment that allows these fast growing animals to supply oxygen to the tissues in an easy fashion.
