A Method for the Quantitative Modification and Estimation of Carboxylic Acid Groups in Proteins

TL;DR: The kinetics of the reaction indicates that there are limits to the variation of carbodiimide and nucleophile when quantitative modification is desired, but that a wide variety of reagents can be used if quantitative reaction is not essential.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure of the O-glycosidically linked carbohydrate units of fetuin.

TL;DR: Fetuin isolated from fetal calf serum was shown to contain 3 carbohydrate units which are attached to serine and threonine residues on the peptide chain and are distinct from the 3 asparagine-linked heteropolysaccharides previously reported to occur in this protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Studies on the chemical and enzymatic modification of glycoproteins. A general method for the tritiation of sialic acid-containing glycoproteins.

TL;DR: Evidence is presented to establish the identity of the radioactive derivative as 5-acetamido-3, 5-dideoxy-l-arabino-2-heptulosonic acid and to indicate it as the sole site of tritium incorporation in the carbohydrate chain.

Gasometric determination of carboxyl groups in free amino acids

TL;DR: The method here presented depends on the fact that a-amino acids, when boiled in water with an excess of ninhydrin (triketohydrindene hydrate) at pH 1 to 5, evolve the CO2 of their carboxyl groups quantitatively in a few minutes.

The Determination of Hydrogen Ions

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-phase liquid-metal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator is used to eliminate dissipative boundary layer electrical shunts by displacing the slow moving, conducting liquid boundary layer adjacent the insulating walls of the generator with a thin gas layer.
