Evaluation of micro-CT for emphysema assessment in mice: comparison with non-radiological techniques

TLDR
Histomorphometry is the most sensitive technique since it detects airspace enlargement before the other methods (1 h after treatment) and micro-CT correlates well with histology (r2 = 0.63) proving appropriate for longitudinal studies.
Abstract
Objectives To define the potential, limitations and synergies of micro-CT and other non-radiological techniques for the quantification of emphysema and related processes in mice, by performing a complete characterization of the elastase-induced emphysema model.

In vivo small animal micro-CT using nanoparticle contrast agents.

TL;DR: This review focuses on new developments for in vivo small animal micro-CT using novel nanoparticle probes applied in preclinical research by adding spectral capabilities to separate multiple co-injected nanoparticles in vivo.

Quantification of Lung Fibrosis and Emphysema in Mice Using Automated Micro-Computed Tomography

TL;DR: High resolution in vivo micro-computed tomography image analysis algorithm that runs fully automated and allows quantification of aerated lung volume in mice is shown to be a reliable quantitative tool to investigate experimental lung fibrosis and emphysema in mice.

Quantification of lung damage in an elastase-induced mouse model of emphysema

TL;DR: Micro-CT-derived descriptors are more sensitive than the other methods compared, to detect in vivo early signs of the disease.

In vivo X-Ray Computed Tomographic Imaging of Soft Tissue with Native, Intravenous, or Oral Contrast

TL;DR: The strategies available to visualize lung, fat, brain, kidney, liver, spleen, vasculature, gastrointestinal tract, and liver tissues of living mice are reviewed using either innate contrast, or commercial injectable or ingestible agents with selective perfusion.

Automatic lung segmentation for accurate quantitation of volumetric X-ray CT images

TL;DR: A sequence of morphological operations is used to smooth the irregular boundary along the mediastinum in order to obtain results consistent with these obtained by manual analysis, in which only the most central pulmonary arteries are excluded from the lung region.

Comparison of computed density and macroscopic morphometry in pulmonary emphysema.

TL;DR: High-resolution computed tomography scans were obtained in 63 subjects referred for surgical resection of a cancer or for transplantation to find out whether the relative area of lung occupied by attenuation values lower than a threshold would be a measurement of macroscopic emphysema.

Cytokines in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

TL;DR: The cytokine profile seen in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is different from that observed in asthma, and the role of these cytokines needs to be defined and there is a potential for anticytokine therapy in chronic obstetric pulmonary disease.
