How do you feel? Interoception: the sense of the physiological condition of the body.
TLDR
Functional anatomical work has detailed an afferent neural system in primates and in humans that represents all aspects of the physiological condition of the physical body that might provide a foundation for subjective feelings, emotion and self-awareness.Abstract:
As humans, we perceive feelings from our bodies that relate our state of well-being, our energy and stress levels, our mood and disposition. How do we have these feelings? What neural processes do they represent? Recent functional anatomical work has detailed an afferent neural system in primates and in humans that represents all aspects of the physiological condition of the physical body. This system constitutes a representation of 'the material me', and might provide a foundation for subjective feelings, emotion and self-awareness.read more

Burst spinal cord stimulation for limb and back pain.
TL;DR: In contrast to tonic stimulation, burst stimulation was able to provide pain relief without the generation of paresthesias, permitting them to use a double-blinded placebo controlled approach.

The emotional power of music: How music enhances the feeling of affective pictures
TL;DR: It is suggested that emotional pictures evoke a more cognitive mode of emotion perception, whereas congruent presentations of emotional visual and musical stimuli rather automatically evoke strong emotional feelings and experiences.

The neural bases of social pain: evidence for shared representations with physical pain.
TL;DR: This review summarizes a program of research that has explored the idea that experiences of physical pain and social pain rely on shared neural substrates, and evidence showing that social pain activates pain-related neural regions is reviewed.

TL;DR: A new method which relates cardiac-gated fMRI timeseries with continuous-time heart rate variability (HRV) to estimate central autonomic processing and demonstrated HF correlation with fMRI activity in the hypothalamus, cerebellum, parabrachial nucleus/locus ceruleus, periaqueductal gray, amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, and dorsomedial/dorsolateral prefrontal, posterior insular, and middle temporal cortices.

Feelings of emotion and the self.
TL;DR: It is reasonable to suggest that, in its simplest form, the self process requires a composite representation of the ongoing state of the organism as reflected in subcortical and cortical somatic maps within the central nervous system.

The Principles of Psychology
TL;DR: For instance, the authors discusses the multiplicity of the consciousness of self in the form of the stream of thought and the perception of space in the human brain, which is the basis for our work.

Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain
TL;DR: The authors argued that rational decisions are not the product of logic alone - they require the support of emotion and feeling, drawing on his experience with neurological patients affected with brain damage, Dr Damasio showed how absence of emotions and feelings can break down rationality.
