Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

Does situation awareness add to the validity of cognitive tests

TL;DR: Some measures of SA do show incremental validity, even against a backdrop of a large number of cognitive variables, and can be a worthwhile addition to standard batteries of tests used to predict performance in cognitively oriented industrial tasks.

Trait and State Differences in Working Memory Capacity

TL;DR: In this article, an unexpected phone call informs us that two meetings have been rescheduled: a first one for a different time today and a second one for tomorrow, after receiving this message, we attempt to update our newly created task list within WM to incorporate the new meeting times.

Neuroimaging Contributions to the Understanding of Discourse Processes

TL;DR: Some of the components of discourse processing revealed by neuroimaging research, like protagonist perspective monitoring, are relatively new to the discourse processing theory as mentioned in this paper, and there is uncertainty about the reality of these networks and about their anatomical location.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of noise exposure and musical training on suprathreshold auditory processing and speech perception in noise.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of noise exposure on auditory processing, including the perception of speech in noise, in adult humans, and explored whether musical training might improve some aspects of auditory processing and thus counteract or ameliorate any negative impacts of the noise exposure.

Growth in Literacy and Cognition in Bilingual Children at Risk or Not at Risk for Reading Disabilities.

TL;DR: This paper investigated growth in reading, vocabulary, and memory in children (ages 5 to 10) learning English as a second language identified at risk for reading disabilities (RD), and found that RD children were significantly below children not at risk in English and Spanish reading, Spanish short-term memory (STM), Spanish comprehension, and English working memory (WM).

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
