Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

Adaptive training using an artificial neural network and EEG metrics for within- and cross-task workload classification.

TL;DR: This article examined classification accuracies for ANNs trained on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded while participants performed the same (within task) and different (cross) tasks for short periods of time with little or no prior exposure to the tasks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Working memory capacity and go/no-go task performance: Selective effects of updating, maintenance, and inhibition.

TL;DR: The results indicate a relationship between working memory capacity and the ability to selectively update, maintain, and retrieve information, especially in interference-rich conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Do Language-Based Processing Tasks Separate Children with Language Impairment from Typical Bilinguals?

TL;DR: The authors report results from two language-based processing tasks designed to investigate the performance of linguistically diverse learners, including Competing Language Processing Task (CLPT) and Non-Word Repetition (NWR).

History of Theories and Measurements of intelligence

TL;DR: Galton's Measurement of Simple Processes as mentioned in this paperocusing on auditory and visual sensory discrimination abilities as well as reaction times to stimuli and the ability to exert hand-squeeze pressure on a dynamometer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Environmental, cognitive, and metacognitive influences on text revision: Assessing the evidence

TL;DR: This article reviewed the progress in understanding text revision, and suggested investigations to increase understanding of revision and to promote integration of research and theory about reading and writing, and they suggested a rich diversity of research approaches.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.
Journal ArticleDOI

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
