Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

Working Memory Deficits of Reading Disabled Children

TL;DR: Reading disabled children seem to have a general lack of capacity for the concurrent processing and storage of verbal information, irrespective of the domain which these measures reflected.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stress effects on working memory, explicit memory, and implicit memory for neutral and emotional stimuli in healthy men

TL;DR: The results support the view that acute stress can be highly disruptive for working memory processing and provide new evidence for the facilitating effects of stress on implicit memory for negative emotional materials and enhance classical conditioning for negative but not positive stimuli.

Robotics in the early childhood classroom: learning outcomes from an 8-week robotics curriculum in pre-kindergarten through second grade

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors looked at 60 children in pre-kindergarten through second grade who completed an 8-week robotics curriculum in their classrooms using the KIWI robotics kit combined with a tangible programming language.
Journal ArticleDOI

Processing relative clauses varying on syntactic and semantic dimensions :an analysis with event-related potentials

TL;DR: The authors used event-related potentials to study how parsing of German relative clauses is influenced by semantic information and found that the past participle elicited an N400 component, larger in amplitude for neutral than for semantically biased verbs, but this occurred only in the case of subject relative clauses.
Journal ArticleDOI

What limits children's working memory span? Theoretical accounts and applications for scholastic development.

TL;DR: It is concluded that working memory span is constrained by rapid loss of active codes and is not simply a measure of capacity for resource sharing, and working memory is also implicated in scholastic development.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
