Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

Working memory capacity and self-regulatory behavior: Toward an individual differences perspective on behavior determination by automatic versus controlled processes

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the importance of working memory capacity for everyday self-regulation and suggest an individual differences perspective on dual-process or dual-system theories of human behavior.
Journal ArticleDOI

Working memory span and the role of proactive interference.

TL;DR: The results suggest that span is influenced by interference, that age differences in span may be due to Differences in the ability to overcome interference rather than to differences in capacity, and that interference plays an important role in the relation between span and other tasks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Short-Term Memory, Working Memory, and Inhibitory Control in Children with Difficulties in Arithmetic Problem Solving

TL;DR: Span tasks that imply passive storage of information showed that poor problem solvers were impaired when they have to retain numerical information, but they did not differ from children who did not have difficulty with mathematics when the material included words.

A mechanistic account of striatal dopamine function in human cognition: psychopharmacological studies with cabergoline and haloperidol.

TL;DR: A neurocomputational model of dopamine function in cognition is tested by administering to healthy participants low doses of D2 agents cabergoline and haloperidol, suggesting that DA dynamically modulates the balance of Go and No-Go basal ganglia pathways during cognitive learning and performance.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
