Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

A new tool for measuring and understanding individual differences in the component processes of reading comprehension

TL;DR: This paper proposed a measure of individual differences in reading comprehension ability that is theoretically motivated, is easy to administer, and has high predictive power, which has the potential for advancing researchers' understanding and measurement of a range of linguistic and cognitive tasks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of adult age on structural and operational capacities in working memory.

TL;DR: Young and older adults exhibited similar effects of the number of potentially relevant variables and of the numbers of required processing operations, but older adults were generally less accurate than young adults.

Working Memory Capacity Predicts Dopamine Synthesis Capacity in the Human Striatum

TL;DR: It is demonstrated for the first time thatWorking memory capacity as measured by listening span predicts dopamine synthesis capacity in the striatum, indicating that subjects with low working memory capacity have low DA synthesis capacity at baseline in the Striatum, whereas subjects with high working memory Capacity have high DA synthesis Capacity in thestriatum.
Journal ArticleDOI

The structure of verbal abilities in young and older adults.

Susan Kemper, +1 more
- 01 Jun 2001 -
TL;DR: The structure of verbal abilities in young and older adults is somewhat different, suggesting age differences in processing efficiency, and propositional density was associated with the fluency measures as a measure of processing efficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI

Strategy training and working memory task performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined how strategy use influences working memory span performance and the correlation between WM span scores and higher cognitive function, using the operation span measure and the Nelson-Denny assessment of reading ability.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
