Individual differences in working memory and reading

TLDR
The reading span, the number of final words recalled, varied from two to five for 20 college students and was correlated with three reading comprehension measures, including verbal SAT and tests involving fact retrieval and pronominal reference.

Individual Differences in Working Memory for Comprehension and Following Directions

TL;DR: In this paper, the extent to which individual differences in working memory capacity were related to differences in comprehension and following direction was studied in first, third, and sixth graders, and the relationship between the span measures and following directions indicated that the role of working memory in following directions increased with age.

Working Memory and Reading: A Life-span Perspective:

TL;DR: The relationships among working memory, memory span, and reading skills were studied in 1266 individuals, aged 6-49 as discussed by the authors, who were administered tests of word recognition, pseudoword decoding, reading and reading comprehension.

Age and the availability of inferences.

TL;DR: In this article, age differences in inference availability and memory were investigated using a speeded decision procedure and cued recall, showing that older adults read passages that directly suggested either a target inference or an incorrect, competing inference before finally supporting the target inference.
Journal ArticleDOI

Error monitoring in speech production: a computational test of the perceptual loop theory.

TL;DR: A theory of speech monitoring that assumes that the quality of one's speech is checked by the speech comprehension system is formalized by way of formalizing it as a computational model and it is concluded that including an inner loop through thespeech comprehension system generates predictions that fit the empirical data.
Journal ArticleDOI

Developmental consequences of poor phonological short-term memory function in childhood: a longitudinal study.

TL;DR: Persistently poor phonological memory skills do not appear to significantly constrain the acquisition of language, mathematics or number skills over the early school years, however, more general working memory skills appear to be crucial.

The magical number seven, plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory of information as discussed by the authors provides a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects and provides a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

The magical number seven plus or minus two: some limits on our capacity for processing information

TL;DR: The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating the authors' stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of their subjects, and the concepts and measures provided by the theory provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions.

A spreading-activation theory of semantic processing

TL;DR: The present paper shows how the extended theory can account for results of several production experiments by Loftus, Juola and Atkinson's multiple-category experiment, Conrad's sentence-verification experiments, and several categorization experiments on the effect of semantic relatedness and typicality by Holyoak and Glass, Rips, Shoben, and Smith, and Rosch.

Controlled and automatic human information processing: II. Perceptual learning, automatic attending and a general theory.

TL;DR: Tested the 2-process theory of detection, search, and attention presented by the current authors (1977) in a series of experiments and demonstrated the qualitative difference between 2 modes of information processing: automatic detection and controlled search.

Toward a model of text comprehension and production.

TL;DR: The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel, and a model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory.

How can I improve my working memory for reading comprehension?

Individual differences in reading comprehension may reflect differences in working memory capacity, specifically in the trade-off between its processing and storage functions.
