TLDR
The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus in Denmark has increased across all age groups, and attention should be paid to this development by preventive health services.
Abstract
Aims: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing worldwide. We studied the prevalence of GDM from 2004 to 2012 in Danish women aged 15–49 years using registries with records of the diagnosis of GDM at delivery. Methods: We conducted a national register-based study of 12,538 women with a diagnosis of GDM during a pregnancy leading to a live birth in the period 2004–2012. The diagnosis of GDM was taken from the National Patient Registry and combined with the total number of births at the national level from Statistics Denmark. Prevalence estimates were reported as crude and age-standardized using Danish and international data for women aged 15–49 years. Results: A total of 566,083 live births was registered in Denmark from 2004 to 2012. The age-standardized prevalence of GDM increased from 1.7% (1095/63,465) of the total births in 2004 to 2.9% (1721/56,894) of the total births in 2012. During the period 2004–2012, the age-stratified prevalence increased from 1.1 to 1.8% among women ...

Ambient air pollution and gestational diabetes mellitus: A review of evidence from biological mechanisms to population epidemiology.

TL;DR: It is indicated that maternal first trimester exposure to SO2 increased the risk of GDM, while pre-pregnancy O3 exposure was inversely associated with GDM risk, and additional mechanism studies on the molecular level are needed to provide persuasive rationale underlying the air pollution-GDM relationship.

Ethnic Disparities in Gestational Diabetes.

TL;DR: Various factors such as access to screening, body composition, genetics and gestational weight gain may result in ethnic disparities in the prevalence and outcomes of GDM.

TL;DR: The number of women diagnosed with GDM has increased and the proportion of GDM women receiving insulin treatment has increased, and the birth weight in diet-treated women has been virtually normal for the last 5 years of the reported period.

Gestational Diabetes Risk in Migrants. A Nationwide, Register-Based Study of all Births in Denmark 2004 to 2015.

TL;DR: Substantial variation in the risk of GDM according to country of origin is demonstrated and the risk associations are only slightly affected by socio-economic position and BMI.

A qualitative study about the experiences of ethnic minority pregnant women with gestational diabetes.

TL;DR: How non-Western ethnic minority pregnant women in Denmark experience the hospital-based information about gestational diabetes mellitus and how they integrate this information into their everyday life is explored and women with low health literacy/poor Danish language skills seem to be most challenged by the diagnosis.

TL;DR: The Brazilian study provided evidence that adverse perinatal outcomes are associated with levels of maternal glycemia below those diagnostic of GDM by American Diabetes Association or World Health Organization criteria, however, the results were potentially confounded by the treatment of G DM.

TL;DR: Although the NPR is overall a sound data source, both the content and the definitions of single variables have changed over time and researchers using the data should carefully consider potential fallacies in the data before drawing conclusions.

Increasing prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus: a public health perspective.

TL;DR: The trend toward older maternal age, the epidemic of obesity and diabetes, and the decrease in physical activity and the adoption of modern lifestyles in developing countries may all contribute to a true increase in the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus.

The Danish Medical Birth Registry.

TL;DR: The content and usage of the Danish Medical Birth Registry over time is described, which indicates that the quality of the registry depends upon having a close link to the staff responsible for delivery services and thus having the necessary specialised skills and interest.
