Outcomes of early- and late-identified children at 3 years of age: findings from a prospective population-based study.

TLDR
Whereas the effect of age of hearing aid fitting on child outcomes was weak, a younger age at cochlear implant switch-on was significantly associated with better outcomes for children with cochLear implants at 3 years of age.
Abstract
Objective:To address the question of whether, on a population level, early detection and amplification improve outcomes of children with hearing impairment.Design:All families of children who were born between 2002 and 2007, and who presented for hearing services below 3 years of age at Australian H

Phonological awareness and early reading skills in children with cochlear implants

TL;DR: Findings from a population study on outcomes of children with hearing loss in Australia suggest earlier age at cochlear implantation was significantly associated with better word reading ability, after controlling for the effects of language, receptive vocabulary, nonverbal cognitive ability and device configuration.

Examination of characteristics and management of children with hearing loss and autism spectrum disorders.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that some children with autism can derive benefits from the use of amplification, and this clinical population is consistent with previous reports.

A qualitative review of parents' perspectives on the value of CAEP recording in influencing their acceptance of hearing devices for their child.

TL;DR: Compliance with early hearing aid use and referral for cochlear implant depends upon parents’ understanding of their infant’s hearing loss by including CAEPs in the audiology pathway.
Journal ArticleDOI

Social inclusion for children with hearing loss in listening and spoken Language early intervention: an exploratory study.

TL;DR: Most children with hearing loss had comparable outcomes to those with typical hearing on the ‘education’ and ‘interacting with society and fulfilling social roles’ facets of social inclusion.

Language Outcomes in Deaf or Hard of Hearing Teenagers Who Are Spoken Language Users: Effects of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Confirmation.

TL;DR: While adolescent language scores were higher for deaf or hard of hearing teenagers exposed to UNHS and those who had their hearing loss confirmed by 9 months, these group differences were not significant within the whole sample and there was some evidence of a beneficial effect of early confirmation of hearing loss on relative expressive language gain from childhood to adolescence.

Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test

TL;DR: The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) as discussed by the authors is an individually administered, norm-referenced test of single-word receptive (or hearing) vocabulary.

Language of Early- and Later-identified Children With Hearing Loss

TL;DR: Significantly better language development was associated with early identification of hearing loss and early intervention and the variable on which the two groups differed must be considered a potential explanation for the language advantage documented in the earlier-identified group.

Early Intervention and Language Development in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between age of enrollment in intervention and language outcomes at 5 years of age in a group of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
