Relationships between multidrug resistance (MDR) and stem cell markers in human chronic myeloid leukemia cell lines

TLDR
The results suggest that both cell lines possess CD34+CD38- profiles of hematopoietic stem cell markers, which are considered a marker of tumor stem cells.

Disulfiram modulated ROS-MAPK and NFκB pathways and targeted breast cancer cells with cancer stem cell-like properties.

TL;DR: Disulfiram/copper inhibited BCSCs and enhanced cytotoxicity of PAC in BC cell lines and may be caused by simultaneous induction of ROS and inhibition of NFκB.
Journal ArticleDOI

Multidrug Efflux Pumps and Cancer Stem Cells: Insights Into Multidrug Resistance and Therapeutic Development

TL;DR: A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the resistance of stem cells to chemotherapy could lead to the discovery of new therapeutic targets and improvement of current anticancer strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Liposome encapsulated Disulfiram inhibits NFκB pathway and targets breast cancer stem cells in vitro and in vivo.

TL;DR: A liposome-encapsulated DS (Lipo-DS) was developed and its anticancer effect and mechanisms in vitro and in vivo showed very strong anticancer efficacy and no significant in vivo nonspecific toxicity was observed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Glioblastoma cell line-derived spheres in serum-containing medium versus serum-free medium: A comparison of cancer stem cell properties

TL;DR: It is concluded that sphere culture in serum-containing medium and serum-free medium provides the most efficient enrichment of cancer stem cells.
Journal ArticleDOI

Drug resistance and cancer stem cells: the shared but distinct roles of hypoxia-inducible factors HIF1α and HIF2α.

TL;DR: It is explored the PI3K/AKT cell survival pathway that may support refractory cancer by promoting CSCs and activating both HIF1α and HIF2α and how these differences in relation to CSC‐associated drug resistance could reduce chemotherapy resistance and prevent cancer relapse.

Human acute myeloid leukemia is organized as a hierarchy that originates from a primitive hematopoietic cell

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the cell capable of initiating human AML in non-obese diabetic mice with severe combined immunodeficiency disease (NOD/SCID mice) — termed the SCID leukemia-initiating cell, or SL-IC — possesses the differentiate and proliferative capacities and the potential for self-renewal expected of a leukemic stem cell.

Multidrug resistance in cancer: role of ATP–dependent transporters

TL;DR: The ability to predict and circumvent drug resistance is likely to improve chemotherapy, and it has become apparent that resistance exists against every effective drug, even the authors' newest agents.
Journal ArticleDOI

A cell initiating human acute myeloid leukaemia after transplantation into SCID mice

TL;DR: This in vivo model replicates many aspects of human AML and defines a new leukaemia-initiating cell which is less mature than colony-forming cells.
