TLDR
Measurements of the attachment of the PAM 212 line of mouse epithelial cells to various collagen substrates show that these cells adhere preferentially to type IV, basement membrane collagen, which suggests that lamin is produced and utilized by these epithelium cells to attach to basement membranes collagen.

Transforming growth factor-beta stimulates the expression of fibronectin and collagen and their incorporation into the extracellular matrix.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate a functional involvement of fibronectin in mediating cellular responses to TGFbeta, and suggest a model for TGF beta action based on the control of the extracellular matrix in target cells.

Basement Membrane Complexes with Biological Activity

TL;DR: Molecular sieve studies on the soluble extract demonstrate that laminin, entactin, and nidogen are associated in large but dissociable complexes which may be a necessary intermediate in the deposition of basement membrane.
Journal ArticleDOI

Role of collagenous matrices in the adhesion and growth of cells.

TL;DR: Current knowledge of the types of collagen and their distribution and biosynthesis is outlined, including fibronectin, which not only functions as an attachment protein, but also may play an important role in repair reactions.

Isolation and characterization of type IV procollagen, laminin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycan from the EHS sarcoma.

TL;DR: It is indicated that lysine-derived cross-links and disulfide bonds stabilize the collagenous component in the matrix but not the laminin or the heparan sulfate proteoglycan.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and biological activity of basement membrane proteins

TL;DR: Observations of major structural proteins of basement membranes have provided a more defined understanding of basement membrane function and the definition of new research goals in the future.

TL;DR: Using an improved method of gel electrophoresis, many hitherto unknown proteins have been found in bacteriophage T4 and some of these have been identified with specific gene products as mentioned in this paper.

Serial cultivation of strains of human epidermal keratinocytes: the formation of keratinizing colonies from single cells.

TL;DR: Human diploid epidermis epidermal cells have been successfully grown in serial culture and it is possible to isolate keratinocyte clones free of viable fibroblasts, and human diploids keratinocytes appear to have a finite culture lifetime.

Laminin--a glycoprotein from basement membranes.

TL;DR: Investigation of a large noncollagenous glycoprotein isolated from a mouse tumor that produces basement membrane shows that it is produced by a variety of cultured cells, suggesting that this protein or an immunologically related protein is a constituent of the basement membranes of these tissues.

Fibronectins—adhesive glycoproteins of cell surface and blood

TL;DR: A recently characterised class of adhesive, high molecular weight glycoproteins is present on the surfaces of cells, in connective tissue matrices, and in extracellular fluids.
