Sample size and optimal designs for reliability studies

Abstract
A method is developed to calculate the required number of subjects k in a reliability study, where reliability is measured using the intraclass correlation rho. The method is based on a functional approximation to earlier exact results. The approximation is shown to have excellent agreement with the exact results and one can use it easily without intensive numerical computation. Optimal design configurations are also discussed; for reliability values of about 40 per cent or higher, use of two or three observations per subject will minimize the total number of observations required.

The Utility of the Sit-to-Stand Test for Inpatients in the Acute Hospital Setting After Lung Transplantation.

TL;DR: The 60-second STS demonstrated excellent interrater reliability and moderate validity and was responsive to change postoperatively, and represents a safe, feasible functional performance tool for inpatients post-LTx.

Intra- and inter-rater reproducibility of ultrasound imaging of patellar and quadriceps tendons in critically ill patients.

TL;DR: It is concluded that ultrasound imaging acquisition performed by independent raters for tendon thickness, CSA, and echogenicity monitoring of critically ill patients are acceptable and are not influenced by rater experience.

Validity and reliability of an activity monitor to quantify arm movements and activity in adults following distal radius fracture

TL;DR: Evidence is found that an activity monitor is a valid and reliable measurement tool that therapists can use with their patients to quantify gross arm activity to enable monitoring of injury recovery and rehabilitation adherence.
