Sample size and optimal designs for reliability studies

Abstract
A method is developed to calculate the required number of subjects k in a reliability study, where reliability is measured using the intraclass correlation rho. The method is based on a functional approximation to earlier exact results. The approximation is shown to have excellent agreement with the exact results and one can use it easily without intensive numerical computation. Optimal design configurations are also discussed; for reliability values of about 40 per cent or higher, use of two or three observations per subject will minimize the total number of observations required.

The role of cervical spine range of motion in recovery from whiplash associated disorders

TL;DR: The clinical implication of this research is that if patients are experiencing reduced cervical spine Range of Motion a few weeks after their whiplash injury they will not necessarily have a poor outcome in the longer term as is commonly believed at present.

Reliability and validity of the Meaningfulness of Songwriting Scale with university students taking a popular songwriting class

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tested the properties of the Meaningfulness of Songwriting Scale (MSS) with university students studying songwriting, to determine its validity and reliability in measuring the extent of meaning derived from the songwriting process.

Measuring outcomes from a peer-led social communication skills intervention for adults following acquired brain injury

Susan Howell
TL;DR: Preliminary evidence of advantage for peer-led groups in ABI intervention is found and a new conversational measure shows promise as a method to detect change in group communication behaviour.

In vitro validation of a hand-held optical reflectometer to measure clinically observed erosive tooth wear.

TL;DR: The optical pen-size reflectometer was able to adequately differentiate ETW on permanent teeth, with highly reliable and reproducible measurements, butETW on deciduous teeth was less accurately differentiated.

Consistency of self-reported drug use events in a mixed methods study of people who inject drugs

TL;DR: Assessment of consistency of information provided by people who inject drugs (PWID) during quantitative and qualitative interviews in mixed methods studies indicated that age of onset for heroin use, heroin injection, and injection of any drug was significantly lower when assessed by qualitative methods as compared to quantitative methods.
