Sample size and optimal designs for reliability studies
TLDR
A functional approximation to earlier exact results is shown to have excellent agreement with the exact results and one can use it easily without intensive numerical computation.Abstract:
A method is developed to calculate the required number of subjects k in a reliability study, where reliability is measured using the intraclass correlation rho. The method is based on a functional approximation to earlier exact results. The approximation is shown to have excellent agreement with the exact results and one can use it easily without intensive numerical computation. Optimal design configurations are also discussed; for reliability values of about 40 per cent or higher, use of two or three observations per subject will minimize the total number of observations required.read more

AwareCare: a pilot randomized controlled trial of an awareness-based staff training intervention to improve quality of life for residents with severe dementia in long-term care settings
Linda Clare,Rhiannon Whitaker,Robert T. Woods,Catherine Quinn,Hannah Jelley,Zoe Hoare,Joan Woods,Murna Downs,Barbara A. Wilson +8 more
TL;DR: Training care staff to observe and identify signs of awareness in residents with severe dementia resulted in improved quality of life for residents and relatives of residents in the intervention homes perceived an improvement in theirquality of life.

TL;DR: Airway assessments by examiners with different backgrounds might have reliable anteroposterior linear measurements; cross-sectional areas at the levels of the palatal plane, soft palate, and tongue; and sagittal area and volume; and unreliable measurements were linear width,Cross-sectional area at the level of the vallecula, and minimum axial area.

TL;DR: The reliability of two MRI scoring systems for assessment of haemophilic arthropathy are compared: one progressive system that displays the most severe change and one additive system that depicts osteochondral and soft tissue‐related changes.

4D-SPECT/CT in orthopaedics: a new method of combined quantitative volumetric 3D analysis of SPECT/CT tracer uptake and component position measurements in patients after total knee arthroplasty
TL;DR: This combined 3D-volumetric standardised method of analysing the location, size and the intensity of SPECT/CT tracer uptake regions (“hotspots”) and the determination of the TKA position was highly reliable and represents a novel promising approach to biomechanics.

Reliability and validity of shoulder function outcome measures in people with a proximal humeral fracture
TL;DR: The five outcome measures assessing shoulder function provided values for reliability and validity that meet measurement requirements for use in groups of people after a proximal humeral fracture, however, the use of these outcome measures might be limited by low absolute agreement between measurements and their content covering multiple domains of functioning.
