Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia: recurrence and the impact of antibiotic treatment in a prospective multicenter study.

TLDR
Nafcillin was superior to vancomycin in preventing bacteriologic failure (persistent bacteremia or relapse) for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) baiteremia following antistaphylococcal therapy, and most were relapses.

Staphylococcus aureus Infections: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Clinical Manifestations, and Management

TL;DR: This review comprehensively covers the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management of S. aureus as a leading cause of bacteremia and infective endocarditis as well as osteoarticular, skin and soft tissue, pleuropulmonary, and device-related infections.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reduced Vancomycin Susceptibility in Staphylococcus aureus, Including Vancomycin-Intermediate and Heterogeneous Vancomycin-Intermediate Strains: Resistance Mechanisms, Laboratory Detection, and Clinical Implications

TL;DR: It is now becoming clear that sequential point mutations in key global regulatory genes contribute to the hVISA and VISA phenotypes, which are associated predominately with cell wall thickening and restricted vancomycin access to its site of activity in the division septum.
Journal ArticleDOI

Epidemiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

TL;DR: The trends in both nosocomial and community-associated MRSA infections are examined and recent studies of the mechanisms that allow S. aureus to become resistant to currently available drugs are explored.

Rapid method for epidemiological evaluation of gram-positive cocci by field inversion gel electrophoresis.

TL;DR: The utility of the rapid method for the isolation of intact chromosomal DNA from gram-positive cocci that is suitable for in situ restriction endonuclease digestion in agarose blocks is demonstrated in the epidemiological evaluation of Staphylococcus epidermidis clusters from two hospitals as well as of additional representative staphylitis and enterococci.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prospective study of 424 cases of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: determination of factors affecting incidence and mortality.

TL;DR: A small number of patients with a history of S. aureus infection and a high mortality are diagnosed with bacteraemia, a common complication of the infection, and the use of antibiotics to treat this condition is recommended.
Journal ArticleDOI

Staphylococcus aureus catheter-associated bacteremia. Minimal effective therapy and unusual infectious complications associated with arterial sheath catheters.

TL;DR: A 10- to 15-day course of parenteral antibiotics was equivalent to longer courses of therapy in patients without early complications, and almost one third of S aureus catheter-related bacteremias were community acquired, reflecting increased usage of intravascular devices for home parenTERal support.
Journal ArticleDOI

Recurrent Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia: Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis Findings in 29 Patients

TL;DR: It is suggested that recurrent episodes of S. aureus bacteremia are primarily relapses and are associated with an indwelling foreign body, receiving vancomycin therapy, and hemodialysis dependence.

Receptor Specific Clearance by the Reticuloendothelial System in Chronic Liver Diseases: DEMONSTRATION OF DEFECTIVE C3b-SPECIFIC CLEARANCE IN PRIMARY BILIARY CIRRHOSIS

TL;DR: Measurements of receptor specific clearance, but not clearance of aggregated proteins, have revealed a highly specific defect in reticuloendothelial function in PBC.
