Abstract
The structural features of the porous type of anodic oxide coating applied to aluminum have been investigated with the electron microscope. These coatings consist of close‐packed cells of oxide, predominately hexagonal in shape, each of which contains a single pore. Pore size is a function of the electrolyte used and is independent of forming voltage. Wall thickness and barrier thickness are primarily a function of forming voltage and are affected to a minor degree by the electrolyte type. Pertinent dimensions of anodic coatings formed in sulfuric acid, oxalic acid, chromic acid, and phosphoric acid electrolytes are presented, and formulas are given for calculating the cell size and pore volume of these coatings.

Periodic Holes with 10 nm Diameter Produced by Grazing Ar+Milling of the Barrier Layer in Hexagonally Ordered Nanoporous Alumina

TL;DR: In this article, the bottom of each pore is U-shaped and it can be used to open the bottom cap of the alumina nanochannel by controlled grazing angle ion milling and thus form smaller pore apertures.

Nonlithographic fabrication of lateral superlattices for nanometric electromagnetic-optic applications

TL;DR: A nonlithographic technique that utilizes highly ordered anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) porous membrane as a template is employed as a general fabrication means for the formation of an array of vastly different two-dimensional lateral superlattice nanostructures.

Porous Anodic Aluminum Oxide Bragg Stacks as Chemical Sensors

TL;DR: Porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) Bragg stacks were fabricated by a modified two-step anodization, and the optical transmittance spectra of AAO-Bragg stacks soaking in varied analytes (air, series, series) were analyzed in this article.

Branchy alumina nanotubes

TL;DR: In this paper, Branchy Alumina Nanotubes (bANTs) have been shown to exist in aluminum oxide, and the authors deduced that the completely detached multibranchy cells of anodic porous alumina (APA) film should be evolved from the stagnant cells of the mother film.

Nanofabrication of a quantum dot array: atomic force microscopy of electropolished aluminum

TL;DR: In this article, atomic force microscopy was used to examine the morphology of polycrystalline aluminum surfaces that were prepared under different electropolishing conditions, including voltage, time, and temperature.
