Synchronization properties of network motifs

TLDR
An analytic method is proposed to measure the stability of the synchronous state (SSS) the subgraph displays and it is shown that, for undirected graphs, the SSS is correlated with the relative abundance, while in directed graphs the correlation exists only for some specific motifs.
Abstract
We address the problem of understanding the variable abundance of 3-node and 4-node subgraphs (motifs) in complex networks from a dynamical point of view. As a criterion in the determination of the functional significance of a n-node subgraph, we propose an analytic method to measure the stability of the synchronous state (SSS) the subgraph displays. We show that, for undirected graphs, the SSS is correlated with the relative abundance, while in directed graphs the correlation exists only for some specific motifs.

Synchronization in networks with multiple interaction layers.

TL;DR: This work proposes a general framework to assess the stability of the synchronized state in networks with multiple interaction layers, deriving a necessary condition that generalizes the master stability function approach and shows that highly rich phenomenology emerges from this.

Dynamical and spectral properties of complex networks

TL;DR: The main dependence of the synchronization time is on the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix, in contrast to other proposals in terms of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix.

Network motifs in the transcriptional regulation network of Escherichia coli

TL;DR: This work applied new algorithms for systematically detecting network motifs to one of the best-characterized regulation networks, that of direct transcriptional interactions in Escherichia coli, and finds that much of the network is composed of repeated appearances of three highly significant motifs.

Three coupled oscillators as a universal probe of synchronization stability in coupled oscillator arrays

TL;DR: In the process of developing a theory of the three-oscillator probe, it is shown that several regimes of asymptotic coupling can be derived for the array classes, including the case of large imaginary coupling, which apparently has not been explored.
