The effect of Simvastatin on the plasma antioxidant concentrations in patients with hypercholesterolaemia

TLDR
The results suggest that the significant decline in circulating alpha-tocopherol and coenzyme Q10 concentrations was mainly a function of the decrease in serum total cholesterol concentrations, indicating that LDL from the former group may be more vulnerable to free radical-mediated damage and lipid peroxidation.

The epidemiology of Parkinson's disease: risk factors and prevention

TL;DR: In the future, it might be possible to identify Parkinson's disease in its prodromal phase and to promote neuroprotective interventions before the onset of motor symptoms, and the only intervention that seems justifiable for the primary prevention of Parkinson's Disease is the promotion of physical activity, which is likely to be beneficial for the prevention of several chronic diseases.

The role of coenzyme Q10 in statin-associated myopathy: a systematic review.

TL;DR: It is concluded that there is insufficient evidence to prove the etiologic role of CoQ10 deficiency in statin-associated myopathy and that large, well-designed clinical trials are required to address this issue.

Neuroprotective Properties of Statins in Cerebral Ischemia and Stroke

TL;DR: This article reviews the emerging evidence that statins have beneficial effects within the cerebral circulation and brain parenchyma during ischemic stroke and reperfusion and exhibits a number of important neuroprotective properties that likely attenuate the effects of ischemia on the brain vasculature and parenchema.

Effects of Diet and Simvastatin on Serum Lipids, Insulin, and Antioxidants in Hypercholesterolemic Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial

TL;DR: A modified Mediterranean-type diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids efficiently potentiated the cholesterol-lowering effect of simvastatin, counteracted the fasting insulin-elevating effect of simulator, and did not decrease serum levels of beta-carotene and ubiquinol-10.

Coenzyme Q10 and statins: biochemical and clinical implications.

TL;DR: Physicians should be aware of this drug-nutrient interaction and be vigilant to the possibility that statin drugs may, in some cases, impair skeletal muscle and myocardial bioenergetics.

Role of oxidized low density lipoprotein in atherogenesis.

TL;DR: New ideas suggest new approaches, that in combination with lowering of plasma cholesterol, could lead to the prevention of atherosclerosis and its complications.

The Pecking Order of Free Radicals and Antioxidants: Lipid Peroxidation, α-Tocopherol, and Ascorbate

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used one-electron reduction potentials to predict a pecking order, or hierarchy, for free radical reactions, which is in agreement with experimentally observed free radical electron (hydrogen atom) transfer reactions.

The role of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants in oxidative modification of LDL.

TL;DR: A comprehensive survey on the compositional properties of LDL relevant for its susceptibility to oxidation, on the mechanism and kinetics of LDL oxidation, and on the chemical and physico-chemical properties of HDL oxidized by exposure to copper ions is provided.

Randomised controlled trial of vitamin E in patients with coronary disease: Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study (CHAOS)

TL;DR: It is concluded that in patients with angiographically proven symptomatic coronary atherosclerosis, alpha-tocopherol treatment substantially reduces the rate of non-fatal MI, with beneficial effects apparent after 1 year of treatment.
