TL;DR: The acid free asymmetric intermolecular α-alkylation of aldehydes with alcohols has been discovered using trifluoroethanol as solvent and affords the enantioenriched functionalized primary alcohols in high yields and good to excellent enantioselectivities with wide substrate scope in the absence of any acid additive.

TL;DR: The catalyst-free sp(3) C-H functionalization of 2-alkylazaarenes has been achieved and this method provides facile synthesis of biologically important azaarene-substituted 3,4-dihydro(thio)coumarins in a single step in high yields.
