Purpose – Scenarios have become a vital methodological approach in business as well as in public policy. When scenarios are used to guide analysis and decision-making, the aim is typically robustness and in this context we argue that two main problems at scenario set level is conservatism, i.e. all scenarios are close to a perceived business-as-usual trajectory and lack of balance in the sense of arbitrarily mixing some conservative and some extreme scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to address these shortcomings by proposing a methodology for generating sets of scenarios which are in a mathematical sense maximally diverse. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, we develop a systematic methodology, Scenario Diversity Analysis (SDA), which addresses the problems of broad span vs conservatism and imbalance. The use of biomass for energy in Sweden - Critical factors and lessons learned

An air hybrid is a vehicle with an ICE modified to also work as an air compressor and air motor. The engine is connected to two air reservoirs, normally the atmosphere and a high pressure tank. The main benefit of such a system is the possibility to make use of the kinetic energy of the vehicle otherwise lost when braking. The main difference between the air hybrid developed in this paper and earlier air hybrid concepts is the introduction of a pressure tank that substitutes the atmosphere as supplier of low air pressure. By this modification, a very high torque can be achieved in compressor mode as well as in air motor mode. A model of an air hybrid with two air tanks was created using the engine simulation code GT-Power. The results from the simulations were combined with a driving cycle to estimate the reduction in fuel consumption. The system was designed to slow down a bus that stops from its maximum speed in urban traffic without using the friction brakes or any other braking system. When this criterion was applied to a 15000 kg bus, the required high pressure tank capacity was 140 litres and the low pressure tank capacity was 600 litres. The low pressure tank can be made very light and is ideally placed on the roof of the vehicle. According to the simulations, 55 percent of the energy absorbed by the engine when braking can be regenerated and returned to the drivetrain. The total reduction in fuel consumption was estimated at 23 percent for urban driving.

An air hybrid for high power absorption and discharge

Background. Circulatory instability with severe hypotension frequently complicates liver transplantation in patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy. Autonomic dysfunction is found early in the course of the disease by analysis of beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV). The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of autonomic neuropathy on intraoperative circulatory instability during liver transplantation for familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy. Methods. Twenty-two patients were evaluated at the Department of Medicine, Umea University Hospital, by spectral analysis of HRV and later received liver transplants at Huddinge University Hospital. The low- and high-frequency bands obtained by spectral analysis of HRV in the supine and upright positions, respectively, were used as representative of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Circulatory instability during transplantation was defined as a fall in systolic arterial blood pressure below 70 mmHg for more than 5 min during the preanhepatic phase. Results. Both arrhythmia preventing spectral analysis of HRV and a sympathetic variability peak below 2.5 mHz 2 were significantly more common among patients with intraoperative circulatory instability (P=0.03 and 0. 004, respectively). A diminished increase in pulse rate when tilting the patients from the supine to the upright position was also more pronounced among patients with circulatory instability (P<0.05). Conclusions. The majority of patients who will develop circulatory instability with a pronounced fall in arterial blood pressure can be identified by Poincare plots of R-R intervals and spectral analysis of HRV. A low sympathetic peak or arrhythmia precluding spectral analysis of HRV is significantly related to operative circulatory instability.

Impact of autonomic neuropathy on circulatory instability during liver transplantation for familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy.

Urban traffic involves frequent acceleration and deceleration. During deceleration, the energy previously used to accelerate the vehicle is mainly wasted on heat generated by the friction brakes. If this energy that is wasted in traditional IC engines could be saved, the fuel economy would improve. One solution to this is a pneumatic hybrid using variable valve timing to compress air during deceleration and expand air during acceleration. The compressed air can also be utilized to supercharge the engine in order to get higher load in the first few cycles when accelerating. A Scania D12 single-cylinder diesel engine has been converted for pneumatic hybrid operation and tested in a laboratory setup. Pneumatic valve actuators have been used to make the pneumatic hybrid possible. The actuators have been mounted on top of the cylinder head of the engine. A pressure tank has been connected to one of the inlet ports and one of the inlet valves has been modified to work as a tank valve. The goal has been to test and evaluate 2 different modes – compression mode (CM) where air is stored in an air tank during deceleration and air-motor mode (AM) where the previously stored pressurized air is used for accelerating the vehicle. This paper also includes an optimization of the CM.
