Bounding the role of black carbon in the climate system: A scientific assessment
Tami C. Bond,Sarah J. Doherty,David W. Fahey,Piers M. Forster,Terje Koren Berntsen,Benjamin DeAngelo,Mark Flanner,Steven J. Ghan,Bernd Kärcher,Dorothy Koch,Stefan Kinne,Yutaka Kondo,Patricia K. Quinn,Marcus C. Sarofim,Martin G. Schultz,Michael Schulz,Chandra Venkataraman,Hua Zhang,Shiqiu Zhang,Nicolas Bellouin,Sarath K. Guttikunda,Philip K. Hopke,Mark Z. Jacobson,Johannes W. Kaiser,Zbigniew Klimont,Ulrike Lohmann,Joshua P. Schwarz,Drew Shindell,Trude Storelvmo,Stephen G. Warren,Charles S. Zender +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided an assessment of black-carbon climate forcing that is comprehensive in its inclusion of all known and relevant processes and that is quantitative in providing best estimates and uncertainties of the main forcing terms: direct solar absorption; influence on liquid, mixed phase, and ice clouds; and deposition on snow and ice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Single‐particle measurements of midlatitude black carbon and light‐scattering aerosols from the boundary layer to the lower stratosphere
Joshua P. Schwarz,Joshua P. Schwarz,Ru-Shan Gao,David W. Fahey,David W. Fahey,David S. Thomson,David S. Thomson,L. A. Watts,L. A. Watts,James C. Wilson,J. M. Reeves,M. Darbeheshti,Darrel Baumgardner,Gregory L. Kok,Serena H. Chung,Serena H. Chung,Michael Schulz,Johannes Hendricks,Axel Lauer,Bernd Kärcher,Jay G. Slowik,Karen H. Rosenlof,Thomas L. Thompson,Andrew O. Langford,Max Loewenstein,Kenneth C. Aikin,Kenneth C. Aikin +26 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a single-particle soot photometer (SP2) was used on a NASA WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft in November 2004 from Houston, Texas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global radiative forcing from contrail cirrus
Ulrike Burkhardt,Bernd Kärcher +1 more
TL;DR: This paper showed that changes in cloudiness associated with spreading of the line-shaped contrails that form behind aircraft may cause almost an order of magnitude more warming than the contrails alone.
Journal ArticleDOI
A parameterization of cirrus cloud formation: Homogeneous freezing of supercooled aerosols
Bernd Kärcher,Ulrike Lohmann +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the number of ice crystals formed via homogeneous freezing of aqueous solution droplets is rather insensitive to details of the aerosol size distribution, but increases rapidly with updraft velocity and decreases with temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heterogeneous nucleation of ice particles on glassy aerosols under cirrus conditions
Benjamin J. Murray,T. W. Wilson,S. Dobbie,Zhiqiang Cui,Sardar M. R. K. Al-Jumur,Ottmar Möhler,Martin Schnaiter,Robert Wagner,Stefan Benz,M. Niemand,Harald Saathoff,Volker Ebert,Volker Ebert,Steven Wagner,Bernd Kärcher +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that heterogeneous nucleation of ice on glassy solution droplets is an important mechanism for ice nucleation in the tropical tropopause layer.
