Femtosecond XANES Study of the Light-Induced Spin Crossover Dynamics in an Iron(II) Complex
Ch. Bressler,Christopher J. Milne,Van-Thai Pham,Amal Elnahhas,R. M. van der Veen,R. M. van der Veen,Wojciech Gawelda,Wojciech Gawelda,Steven L. Johnson,Paul Beaud,Daniel Grolimund,Maik Kaiser,Maik Kaiser,Camelia N. Borca,Gerhard Ingold,Rafael Abela,Majed Chergui +16 more
TL;DR: These results resolve a long-standing issue about the population mechanism of quintet states in iron(II)-based complexes, which are identified as a simple 1MLCT→3 MLCT→5T cascade from the initially excited state.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The SwissFEL X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility as discussed by the authors started construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen, Switzerland) in 2013 and will be ready to accept its first users in 2018 on the Aramis hard Xray branch.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retinal isomerization in bacteriorhodopsin captured by a femtosecond x-ray laser
Przemyslaw Nogly,Tobias Weinert,Daniel James,Sergio Carbajo,Dmitry Ozerov,Antonia Furrer,Dardan Gashi,Veniamin Borin,Petr Skopintsev,Kathrin Jaeger,Karol Nass,Petra Båth,Robert Bosman,Jason E. TL;DR: The principal mechanism of isomerization in this prototypical retinal-binding protein has direct relevance for all other members of this important family of membrane proteins, and it provides insight into how protein environments catalyze photochemical reactions in general.
Journal ArticleDOI
Light-induced spin crossover in Fe(II)-based complexes: The full photocycle unraveled by ultrafast optical and X-ray spectroscopies
Andrea Cannizzo,Christopher J. Milne,Cristina Consani,Wojciech Gawelda,Ch. Bressler,F. van Mourik,Majed Chergui +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the light-induced spin and structure changes upon excitation of the singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) state of Fe(II)-polypyridine complexes are investigated in detail in the case of aqueous iron-tris-bipyridine ([FeII(bpy)3]2+) by a combination of ultrafast optical and X-ray spectroscopies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relating Ion Binding by Fulvic and Humic Acids to Chemical Composition and Molecular Size. 1. Proton Binding
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived some model parameters from chemical characterization results obtained by size exclusion chromatography and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy, and obtained excellent descriptions of all titration data, and the model parameter values were more consistent and chemically reasonable.
