Genital HIV-1 RNA Predicts Risk of Heterosexual HIV-1 Transmission

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that higher concentrations of HIV-1 RNA in genital secretions are associated with a greater risk of heterosexual transmission of HIV, and that these concentrations provide a new biomarker for predicting the infectiousness of HIV–infected individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Applying a PrEP Continuum of Care for Men Who Have Sex With Men in Atlanta, Georgia.

TL;DR: This work evaluated the PrEP care continuum on an Atlanta cohort of MSM and projected how many MSM might achieve protection from HIV with PrEP, and proposed a simplified framework, similar to the HIV care continuum, to achieve protection.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global and regional molecular epidemiology of HIV-1, 1990–2015: a systematic review, global survey, and trend analysis

Joris Hemelaar, +181 more
TL;DR: The distribution of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinants changed over time in countries, regions, and globally as well as at a global level during 2005-15, where subtype B increased, subtypes A and D were stable, and subtypes C and G and CRF02_AG decreased.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficacy of preexposure prophylaxis for HIV-1 prevention among high-risk heterosexuals: subgroup analyses from a randomized trial.

TL;DR: Among higher-risk subgroups in the Partners PrEP Study, including groups solely of higher- risk women, both TDF alone and combined FTC/TDF PrEP had consistently high efficacy for HIV-1 protection, suggesting PrEP, when used with high adherence, is a highly effective prevention strategy for higher risk heterosexuals.
Journal ArticleDOI

An empiric risk scoring tool for identifying high-risk heterosexual HIV-1 serodiscordant couples for targeted HIV-1 prevention

TL;DR: A discrete combination of clinical and behavioral characteristics defines highest risk HIV-1–serodiscordant couples, and internal and external validation showed similar predictive ability of the risk score, even when plasma viral load was excluded from therisk score.
