TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; sum of years lived with disability [YLD] and years of life lost [YLL]) attributable to the independent effects of 67 risk factors and clusters of risk factors for 21 regions in 1990 and 2010.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global burden of disease and injury and economic cost attributable to alcohol use and alcohol-use disorders.

TL;DR: The burden of mortality and disease attributable to alcohol, both globally and for ten large countries, is quantified and concludes that alcohol consumption is one of the major avoidable risk factors, and actions to reduce burden and costs associated with alcohol should be urgently increased.
Journal ArticleDOI

Alcohol as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: The authors' analysis confirms previous research findings that moderate alcohol consumption is protective for type 2 diabetes in men and women.
Journal ArticleDOI

Alcohol as a risk factor for liver cirrhosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: Overall, end-point was an important source of heterogeneity among study results and has important implications not only for studies in which the burden of disease attributable to alcohol consumption is estimated, but also for prevention.
