Journal ArticleDOI
A field guide to pandemic, epidemic and sporadic clones of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Stefan Monecke,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Anna C. Shore,David C. Coleman,Patrick Eberechi Akpaka,Michael Borg,Henry Chow,Margaret Ip,Lutz Jatzwauk,Daniel Jonas,Kristina Kadlec,Angela M. Kearns,Frédéric Laurent,Frances G. O'Brien,Julie C. Pearson,Antje Ruppelt,Stefan Schwarz,E. Scicluna,Peter Slickers,Hui-Leen Tan,Stefan Weber,Ralf Ehricht +21 more
TL;DR: A high level of biodiversity among MRSA, especially among strains harbouring SCCmec IV and V elements is shown, and the data indicate a high rate of genetic recombination in MRSA involving SCC elements, bacteriophages or other mobile genetic elements and large-scale chromosomal replacements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pneumococcal lineages associated with serotype replacement and antibiotic resistance in childhood invasive pneumococcal disease in the post-PCV13 era: an international whole-genome sequencing study.

TL;DR: In this paper, a whole-genome sequenced 3233 invasive pneumococcal disease isolates from laboratory-based surveillance programs in Hong Kong (n=78), Israel, South Africa, Malawi, Nigeria, The Gambia, and USA were collected from children younger than 3 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Origin, evolution, and global transmission of community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus ST8
Lena Strauß,Marc Stegger,Patrick Eberechi Akpaka,Abraham Alabi,Sebastien Breurec,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Beverly Egyir,Anders Rhod Larsen,Frédéric Laurent,Stefan Monecke,Georg Peters,Robert Skov,Robert Skov,Birgit Strommenger,François Vandenesch,Frieder Schaumburg,Alexander Mellmann +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that USA300 is also circulating in sub-Saharan Africa and evolved from a less virulent and less resistant ancestor circulating in Central Europe around 160 years ago, which is important with respect to epidemiology and molecular evolution of pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence of KPC-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Trinidad and Tobago
Patrick Eberechi Akpaka,William H. Swanston,William H. Swanston,Hyginus N. Ihemere,Adriana Correa,Julián Andrés Torres,Jose D. Tafur,Maria Camila Montealegre,John P. Quinn,Maria Virginia Villegas +9 more
TL;DR: KPC-2-producing P. aeruginosa in Trinidad and Tobago is reported, considering their wide geographic spread and known association with mobile genetic elements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from Trinidad & Tobago.
TL;DR: All MRSA isolates were resistant to ceftriaxone, erythromycin, gentamicin and penicillin but were 100% sensitive to vancomycin, rifampin and chloramphenicol.
