TL;DR: Daily acyclovir therapy did not reduce the risk of transmission of HIV-1, despite a reduction in plasma HIV- 1 RNA of 0.25 log(10) copies per milliliter and a 73% reduction in the occurrence of genital ulcers due to HSV-2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Broadly Neutralizing Antibody Responses in a Large Longitudinal Sub-Saharan HIV Primary Infection Cohort.
Elise Landais,Xiayu Huang,Colin Havenar-Daughton,Colin Havenar-Daughton,Ben Murrell,Matthew Price,Matthew Price,Lalinda Wickramasinghe,Alejandra Ramos,Charoan B. Bian,Melissa Simek,Susan Allen,Etienne Karita,William Kilembe,Shabir Lakhi,Mubiana Inambao,Anatoli Kamali,Eduard J. Sanders,Eduard J. Sanders,Omu Anzala,Vinodh A. Edward,Linda-Gail Bekker,Jianming Tang,Jill Gilmour,Sergei L. Kosakovsky-Pond,Pham Phung,Terri Wrin,Shane Crotty,Shane Crotty,Adam Godzik,Pascal Poignard,Pascal Poignard +31 more
TL;DR: Cross-clade neutralization strongly correlated with high viral load as well as with low CD4 T cell counts, subtype-C infection and HLA-A*03(-) genotype, suggesting the HIV Env N332-glycan supersite may be a favorable target for vaccine design.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regional differences in prevalence of HIV-1 discordance in Africa and enrollment of HIV-1 discordant couples into an HIV-1 prevention trial.
Jairam R. Lingappa,Barrot H. Lambdin,Elizabeth A. Bukusi,Kenneth Ngure,Linda Kavuma,Mubiana Inambao,William Kanweka,Susan Allen,James Kiarie,Joseph Makhema,Edwin Were,Rachel Manongi,David Coetzee,Guy de Bruyn,Sinead Delany-Moretlwe,Amalia Magaret,Nelly Mugo,Nelly Mugo,Andrew Mujugira,Patrick Ndase,Connie Celum +20 more
TL;DR: Assessment of the Partners in Prevention HSV-2/HIV-1 Transmission Trial and recruitment data from 12 sites from East and Southern Africa found that site-specific monthly enrollment of HIV-1 discordant couples into the clinical trial was modestly correlated with national HIV- 1 counseling and testing rates and access to palliative care/basic health care.
Journal ArticleDOI
Broadly neutralizing antibody responses in a large longitudinal sub-Saharan HIV primary infection cohort
Elise Landais,Xiayu Huang,Colin Havenar-Daughton,Ben Murrell,Matthew Price,Lalinda Wickramasinghe,Alejandra Ramos,Charoan B. Bian,Melissa Simek,Susan Allen,Etienne Karita,William Kilembe,Shabir Lakhi,Mubiana Inambao,Anatoli Kamali,Eduard J. Sanders,Omu Anzala,Vinodh A. Edward,Linda-Gail Bekker,Jianming Tang,Jill Gilmour,Sergei L. Kosakovsky-Pond,Pham Phung,Terri Wrin,Shane Crotty,Adam Godzik,Pascal Poignard +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, a large longitudinal cohort of primary HIV-1 infection in Eastern and South Africa was evaluated in 439 donors using a 6 cross-clade pseudo-virus panel predictive of neutralization breadth on larger panels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Daily aciclovir for HIV-1 disease progression in people dually infected with HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus type 2: a randomised placebo-controlled trial.
Jairam R. Lingappa,Jared Baeten,Anna Wald,James P. Hughes,Katherine K Thomas,Andrew Mujugira,Nelly Mugo,Elizabeth A. Bukusi,Elizabeth A. Bukusi,Craig R. Cohen,Elly Katabira,Allan R. Wang,Lara Kidoguchi,Linda E Barnes,Renee Ridzon,Lawrence Corey,Lawrence Corey,Lawrence Corey,Connie Celum +42 more
TL;DR: The role of suppression of herpes simplex virus type 2 in reduction of HIV-1 disease progression before initiation of antiretroviral therapy warrants consideration.
