Journal ArticleDOI
Global variation in the beta diversity of lake macrophytes is driven by environmental heterogeneity rather than latitude
Janne Alahuhta,Sarian Kosten,Munemitsu Akasaka,Dominique Auderset,Mattia M. Azzella,Rossano Bolpagni,Claudia Petean Bove,Patricia A. Chambers,Eglantine Chappuis,John S. Clayton,Mary de Winton,Frauke Ecke,Esperança Gacia,Gana Gecheva,Patrick Grillas,Jennifer Hauxwell,Seppo Hellsten,Jan Hjort,Mark V. Hoyer,Christiane Ilg,Agnieszka Kolada,Minna Kuoppala,Torben L. Lauridsen,En‒hua Li,Balázs András Lukács,Marit Mjelde,Alison Mikulyuk,Alison Mikulyuk,Roger Paulo Mormul,Jun Nishihiro,Beat Oertli,Laila Rhazi,Mouhssine Rhazi,Laura Sass,Christine Schranz,Martin Søndergaard,Takashi Yamanouchi,Qing Yu,Hai-Jun Wang,Nigel Willby,Xiao‒ke Zhang,Jani Heino +41 more
TL;DR: Gecheva et al. as mentioned in this paper proposed a method to identify the root cause of gender discrimination in the media and found that women are more likely to be discriminated against than men.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of an exotic invasive macrophyte (tropical signalgrass) on native plant community composition, species richness and functional diversity
TL;DR: The results suggest that competition with emergent species and reduction of underwater radiation, which reduces the number of submersed species, counteract facilitation of free-floating species, contributing to a decrease in plant diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Removing the abyss between conservation science and policy decisions in Brazil
Valter M. Azevedo-Santos,Philip M. Fearnside,Caroline S. Oliveira,André Andrian Padial,Fernando Mayer Pelicice,Dilermando P. Lima,Daniel Simberloff,Thomas E. Lovejoy,André Lincoln Barroso Magalhães,Mário Luís Orsi,Angelo Antonio Agostinho,Francisco de Assis Esteves,Paulo Santos Pompeu,William F. Laurance,Miguel Petrere,Roger Paulo Mormul,Jean Ricardo Simões Vitule +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present recent examples of harmful policies that have great potential to erode biodiversity, and suggest ways to communicate scientific knowledge to decision-makers, in order to fill the gap between conservation science and policies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protected areas: A focus on Brazilian freshwater biodiversity
Valter M. Azevedo-Santos,Renata G. Frederico,Camila K. Fagundes,Paulo Santos Pompeu,Fernando Mayer Pelicice,André Andrian Padial,Marcos Gomes Nogueira,Philip M. Fearnside,Luciano B. Lima,Luciano B. Lima,Vanessa S. Daga,Fagner Junior Machado de Oliveira,Fagner Junior Machado de Oliveira,Jean Ricardo Simões Vitule,Marcos Callisto,Angelo Antonio Agostinho,Francisco de Assis Esteves,Dilermando P. Lima-Junior,André Lincoln Barroso Magalhães,José Sabino,Roger Paulo Mormul,Daniel Grasel,Jansen Zuanon,Fábio S. Vilella,Raoul Henry +24 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that current PAs have limited efficacy in the protection of freshwater biodiversity and propose new PAs should better consider aquatic environments, covering entire basins, rivers and other freshwater habitats.
Journal ArticleDOI
World distribution, diversity and endemism of aquatic macrophytes
Kevin Murphy,Andrey Efremov,Thomas Davidson,Eugenio Molina-Navarro,Karina Fidanza,Tânia Camila Crivelari Betiol,Patricia A. Chambers,Julissa Tapia Grimaldo,Sara Varandas Martins,Irina Springuel,Michael P. Kennedy,Roger Paulo Mormul,Eric D. Dibble,Deborah Hofstra,Balázs András Lukács,Daniel Gebler,Lars Baastrup-Spohr,Jonathan Urrutia-Estrada,Jonathan Urrutia-Estrada +18 more
TL;DR: This article investigated the global distribution, diversity and endemism patterns of 3457 macrophyte species that occur in permanent, temporary or ephemeral inland freshwater and brackish waterbodies worldwide.
