Neuron-specific transduction in the rat septohippocampal or nigrostriatal pathway by recombinant adeno-associated virus vectors

TL;DR: RAAV vectors incorporating either the immediate early cytomegalovirus promoter or the neuron-specific enolase (NSE) promoter were compared to produce localized and persistent transduction in rat brain to produce a local supply of neurotrophic factor to cells that degenerate under certain disease and experimental conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cataracts and Macular Degeneration in Older Americans

TL;DR: Mean systolic blood pressure tended to be slightly higher in persons with either cataracts or macular degeneration than in persons without these conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Associations between the metabolic syndrome and retinal microvascular signs: the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities study.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the metabolic syndrome is associated with microvascular changes in the retina, and associations for arteriovenous nicking, focal arteriolar narrowing, generalized arteriolars narrowing, and venular dilatation were noted, even in people without diabetes or hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prevalence and 5-Year Incidence of Tinnitus among Older Adults : The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study

TL;DR: A population-based study of hearing loss in adults aged 48 to 92 years at baseline in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, suggests that tinnitus is a common problem for older adults and is associated with some modifiable risk factors.
Journal ArticleDOI

The association of atherosclerosis, vascular risk factors, and retinopathy in adults with diabetes : the atherosclerosis risk in communities study

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the prevalence of retinopathy and its associations with atherosclerosis and vascular risk factors in people with diabetes, using a modification of the Airlie House classification system.
