TL;DR: A genome-wide association scan for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) showed that 329 of 331 individuals with the highest-risk genotypes were cases, and 85% of these had advanced AMD, consistent with the hypothesis that HDL metabolism is associated with AMD pathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cerebral white matter lesions, retinopathy, and incident clinical stroke.
Tien Yin Wong,Tien Yin Wong,Tien Yin Wong,Ronald Klein,A. Richey Sharrett,David Couper,Barbara E.K. Klein,Duanping Liao,Larry D. Hubbard,Thomas H. Mosley +9 more
TL;DR: In this cohort, middle-aged persons with cerebral WMLs detected on MRI were more likely to have retinal microvascular abnormalities and to have an increased risk of clinical stroke than people without W MLs.
Journal Article
The relationship of age-related maculopathy, cataract, and glaucoma to visual acuity.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that exudative macular degeneration and pure geographic atrophy are the most important causes of legal blindness in this population and that early age-related maculopathy, central cataract, and glaucoma had a small effect on visual acuity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of diabetic retinopathy. XIV. Ten-year incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy.
TL;DR: These data suggest relatively high 10-year rates of incidence and progression of retinopathy, and despite changes in the treatment of diabetes, there has been little change in the incidence and progress of diabetic Retinopathy during the 10- year study period.
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study Severity Scale for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
TL;DR: A fundus photographic severity scale that combines a 6-step drusen area scale with a 5-step pigmentary abnormality scale was developed and may prove to be useful as a surrogate for progression to advanced AMD.
