Journal ArticleDOI
Continental-scale effects of nutrient pollution on stream ecosystem functioning.
Guy Woodward,Guy Woodward,Mark O. Gessner,Paul S. Giller,Vladislav Gulis,Sally Hladyz,Antoine Lecerf,Antoine Lecerf,Björn Malmqvist,Brendan G. McKie,Scott D. Tiegs,Scott D. Tiegs,Scott D. Tiegs,Helen Cariss,Michael Dobson,Arturo Elosegi,Verónica Ferreira,Manuel A. S. Graça,Tadeusz Fleituch,Jean O. Lacoursière,Marius Nistorescu,Jesús Pozo,Geta Rîşnoveanu,Markus Schindler,Markus Schindler,Angheluta Vadineanu,Lena B. M. Vought,Eric Chauvet,Eric Chauvet +28 more
TL;DR: Dramatically slowed breakdown at both extremes of the gradient indicated strong nutrient limitation in unaffected systems, potential for strong stimulation in moderately altered systems, and inhibition in highly polluted streams, emphasizing the need to complement established structural approaches with functional measures for assessing ecosystem health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Food webs: reconciling the structure and function of biodiversity
Ross M. Thompson,Ulrich Brose,Jennifer A. Dunne,Robert O. Hall,Sally Hladyz,Roger L. Kitching,Neo D. Martinez,Heidi M. Rantala,Tamara N. Romanuk,Daniel B. Stouffer,Daniel B. Stouffer,Jason M. Tylianakis +11 more
TL;DR: The progression of food-web ecology and the challenges in using the food- web approach are summarized and five areas of research are identified where advances can continue, and be applied to global challenges.
Journal ArticleDOI
Resource quality and stoichiometric constraints on stream ecosystem functioning
Sally Hladyz,Sally Hladyz,Mark O. Gessner,Paul S. Giller,Jeśus Pozo,Guy Woodward,Guy Woodward +6 more
TL;DR: Large stoichiometric imbalances and changes in resource quality are likely to have serious consequences for stream ecosystem functioning, especially when riparian zones have been invaded by exotic plant species whose chemical composition differs markedly from that of the native flora.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effects of climatic fluctuations and extreme events on running water ecosystems
Guy Woodward,Núria Bonada,Lee E. Brown,Russell G. Death,Isabelle Durance,Clare Gray,Sally Hladyz,Mark E. Ledger,Alexander M. Milner,Stephen James Ormerod,Ross M. Thompson,Samraat Pawar +11 more
TL;DR: Key questions and challenges need to be addressed to develop more accurate and predictive bio-assessments of the effects of fluctuations, and implications of fluctuations for management practices in an increasingly uncertain world are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem functioning in stream assemblages from different regions: contrasting responses to variation in detritivore richness, evenness and density
Brendan G. McKie,Guy Woodward,Guy Woodward,Sally Hladyz,Sally Hladyz,Marius Nistorescu,Elena Preda,Cristina Popescu,Paul S. Giller,Björn Malmqvist +9 more
TL;DR: The results emphasize the potential importance of detritivore diversity for stream ecosystem functioning, but both the effects of diversity on the studied processes, and the mechanisms underlying those effects, were specific to each assemblage and process.
