Multilocus Sequence Typing as a Replacement for Serotyping in Salmonella enterica
Mark Achtman,John Wain,John Wain,François-Xavier Weill,Satheesh Nair,Satheesh Nair,Zhemin Zhou,Vartul Sangal,Mary G. Krauland,James Hale,Heather Harbottle,Alexandra Uesbeck,Gordon Dougan,Lee H. Harrison,Sylvain Brisse +14 more
TL;DR: It is recommended that Salmonella classification by serotyping should be replaced by MLST or its equivalents as it confounded genetically unrelated isolates and failed to recognize natural evolutionary groupings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence of an Extensively Drug-Resistant Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhi Clone Harboring a Promiscuous Plasmid Encoding Resistance to Fluoroquinolones and Third-Generation Cephalosporins.
Elizabeth J. Klemm,Sadia Shakoor,Andrew J. Page,Farah Naz Qamar,Kim Judge,Dania K. Saeed,Vanessa K. Wong,Timothy J. Dallman,Satheesh Nair,Stephen Baker,Stephen Baker,Ghazala Shaheen,Shahida Qureshi,Mohammad Tahir Yousafzai,Muhammad Khalid Saleem,Zahra Hasan,Gordon Dougan,Gordon Dougan,Rumina Hasan +18 more
TL;DR: The first large-scale emergence and spread of a novel extensively drug-resistant S. Typhi clone in Sindh, Pakistan is reported, highlighting the evolving threat of antibiotic resistance in S. typhi and the value of antibiotic susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing in understanding emerging infectious diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
MinION nanopore sequencing identifies the position and structure of a bacterial antibiotic resistance island.
Philip Ashton,Satheesh Nair,Timothy J. Dallman,Salvatore Rubino,Wolfgang Rabsch,Solomon Mwaigwisya,John Wain,Justin O'Grady +7 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the potential of the MinION device in clinical laboratories to fully characterize the epidemic spread of bacterial pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phylogeographical analysis of the dominant multidrug-resistant H58 clade of Salmonella Typhi identifies inter- and intracontinental transmission events

TL;DR: This whole-genome sequence analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi identifies a single dominant MDR lineage, H58, that has emerged and spread throughout Asia and Africa over the last 30 years, and identifies numerous transmissions of H58.
Journal ArticleDOI
Obesity and its effect on survival in patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation in the United States.
TL;DR: Weight loss should be recommended for all patients awaiting a liver transplantation, especially if their BMI is more than 35 kg/m2, and morbid obesity was an independent predictor of mortality.
