TL;DR: This whole-genome sequence analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi identifies a single dominant MDR lineage, H58, that has emerged and spread throughout Asia and Africa over the last 30 years, and identifies numerous transmissions of H58.
Journal ArticleDOI
Parallel independent evolution of pathogenicity within the genus Yersinia
Sandra Reuter,Sandra Reuter,Thomas R. Connor,Thomas R. Connor,Lars Barquist,Danielle Walker,Theresa Feltwell,Simon R. Harris,Maria Fookes,Miquette Hall,Nicola K. Petty,Nicola K. Petty,Thilo M. Wren,Julian Parkhill,Elisabeth Carniel,Mark Achtman,Mark Achtman,Alan McNally,Nicholas R. Thomson,Nicholas R. Thomson +37 more
TL;DR: This split demonstrates that contrary to hypotheses that all pathogenic Yersinia species share a recent common pathogenic ancestor, they have evolved independently but followed parallel evolutionary paths in acquiring the same virulence determinants as well as becoming progressively more limited metabolically.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic analysis of Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A during an outbreak in Cambodia, 2013-2015.
Laura Maria Francisca Kuijpers,Laura Maria Francisca Kuijpers,Simon Le Hello,Nizar Fawal,Laetitia Fabre,Mathieu Tourdjman,Muriel Dufour,Dara Sar,Chun Kham,Thong Phe,Erika Vlieghe,Christiane Bouchier,Jan Jacobs,Jan Jacobs,François-Xavier Weill +14 more
TL;DR: To analyse the population structure and genetic diversity of these Salmonella Paratyphi A isolates, whole-genome sequencing was used on 65 isolates collected from 1999 to 2014 and found to provide much more accurate information for tracking the individual strains than PFGE.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unusual increase in reported cases of Paratyphoid A fever among travellers returning from Cambodia, January to September 2013
Mathieu Tourdjman,S. Le Hello,Céline M Gossner,G Delmas,S. Tubiana,Laetitia Fabre,Alexandra Kerleguer,Arnaud Tarantola,Angelika Fruth,Ingrid H M Friesema,L. Thorstensen Brandal,J. Lawrence,Ian Fisher,Muriel Dufour,François-Xavier Weill,H de Valk +15 more
TL;DR: Travellers to Cambodia should observe preventive measures including good personal hygiene and food handling practices and an ongoing event that should trigger further investigation of Salmonella Paratyphi A infections.
