Nilles,Duy Pham Thanh,Paul Turner,Paul Turner,Paul Turner,Sona Soeng,Mary Valcanis,Joan Powling,Karolina Dimovski,Geoff Hogg,Jeremy Farrar,Jeremy Farrar,Kathryn E. Holt,Gordon Dougan +93 more
TL;DR: This whole-genome sequence analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi identifies a single dominant MDR lineage, H58, that has emerged and spread throughout Asia and Africa over the last 30 years, and identifies numerous transmissions of H58.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intercontinental dissemination of azithromycin-resistant shigellosis through sexual transmission: a cross-sectional study
Kate S. Baker,Timothy J. Dallman,Philip Ashton,Martin Day,Gwenda Hughes,Paul Crook,V L Gilbart,Sandra Zittermann,Vanessa Allen,Benjamin P Howden,Benjamin P Howden,Takehiro Tomita,Mary Valcanis,Simon R. Harris,Thomas R. Faruque,Julian Parkhill,Stephen Baker,Stephen Baker,François-Xavier Weill,Claire Jenkins,Nicholas R. Thomson,Nicholas R. Thomson +32 more
TL;DR: The intercontinental spread of antimicrobial-resistant shigella through established transmission routes emphasises the need for new approaches to tackle the public health challenge of sexually transmitted infections in MSM.
Journal ArticleDOI
In silico serotyping of E. coli from short read data identifies limited novel O-loci but extensive diversity of O:H serotype combinations within and between pathogenic lineages
Danielle J. Ingle,Mary Valcanis,Alex Kuzevski,Marija Tauschek,Michael Inouye,Timothy P. Stinear,Myron M. Levine,Roy M. Robins-Browne,Roy M. Robins-Browne,Kathryn E. Holt +9 more
TL;DR: The approach bypasses the need for de novo genome assembly by directly screening WGS reads against a curated database of alleles linked to known and novel E. coli O-groups and H-types (the EcOH database) using the software package srst2.
Journal ArticleDOI
South Asia as a Reservoir for the Global Spread of Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Shigella sonnei: A Cross-Sectional Study.
Maia A. Rabaa,Duy Pham Thanh,Niall De Lappe,Martin Cormican,Mary Valcanis,Benjamin P Howden,Sonam Wangchuk,Ladaporn Bodhidatta,Carl J. Mason,To Nguyen Thi Nguyen,Duong Vu Thuy,Corinne N. Thompson,Nguyen Phu Huong Lan,Phat Voong Vinh,Tuyen Ha Thanh,Paul Turner,Paul Turner,Poda Sar,Guy E. Thwaites,Nicholas R Thompson,Nicholas R Thompson,Kathryn E. Holt,Stephen Baker,Stephen Baker +23 more
TL;DR: This study suggests that a single clone, which is widespread in South Asia, is likely driving the current intercontinental surge of ciprofloxacin-resistant S. sonnei and is capable of establishing endemic transmission in new locations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low-level fluoroquinolone resistance among Campylobacter jejuni isolates in Australia.
Leanne Unicomb,John Ferguson,Russell Stafford,R. Ashbolt,Martyn D. Kirk,Niels G. Becker,Mahomed Patel,Gwendolyn L. Gilbert,Mary Valcanis,Lance Mickan +9 more
TL;DR: The very low level of ciprofloxacin resistance in C. jejuni isolates likely reflects the success of Australia's policy of restricting use of fluoroquinolones in food-producing animals.
